I had a feeling this was bound to happen with Unity. It seemed like they were trying so hard to be different, and borrowing ideas from Mac.
I've been using Linux since 93 or 94-ish and used Slackware back in the day. Been using Ubuntu since it started. Gnome had its problems years back, but the new Gnome Shell is fantastic! Nice and stable, and a mature platform.
I actually have a YouTube channel with a few Linux videos where I show you how to make your own Desktop Environment from scratch using the Ubuntu minimal install and a few packages to get a basic desktop with taskbar, launcher and a few goodies. It only uses 160 MB of RAM when booted up! Then I added a few more goodies and I'm up to a whole 230 MB of RAM LOL It's great for running on older hardware! I also have other videos on how to customize your setup and theme it.
If anyone's interested, I can post a link to my YouTube channel, I just don't want to push my channel out there to make it seem like I'm advertising or anything so I'll only do it if asked... I could talk about Linux for hours hahah
