Some historians here are very serious about a guy flying a steam-powered plane (yes, steam!) about 20 years before the Wrights. But there is no question that Wrights were the first people to both achieve powered flight and understand the value of publicity!

One thing that's often overlooked is how relatively common unpowered flight was by the time of the Wrights - guys had been using gliders for sport/recreation in Germany for many years before then and I believe the Wrights knew all about them.

Many 'inventions' happen simultaneously in different parts of the world, because other technology has advanced sufficiently to enable the item to be invented. What is most clever about the Wrights is that they seem to have built their engine largely in a vacuum - by comparison, in France at that time there were loads of engine builders and so obtaining knowledge about engines would have been much easier.

Ira, I believe that the world was created in 7 days but I have never voiced my opinion about your beliefs on this form. Also the word goodness I believe stands for god ness which you don't believe in & I don't care to hear about. Be cool and don't insult the majority and We won't insult the minority. Danny
