low voltage lighting

Postby Kevin A » Mon Jul 03, 2006 7:21 pm

I'm looking for some inexpensive as in "CHEAP" low voltage lighting to luminate the staircase connecting the upper level to the lower level at Pampling Grove for the IRG. anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking of something that could be connected to a 12 volt car battery.
I do have a few ideas lined up, but they involve spending money

Kevin,

We had our fireworks last night... they had lot of low voltage lighting there. Glowsticks! Would that work for you?

Just kidding, I know what you're after, but I had to throw this out just for sh*ts and giggles!

How about some of those solar landscape lights? I've seen them at Big Lots for $5-6 apiece.

I agree. These solar lights can be purchased for about $20-30 for (4) lights at Lowes or Home Depot.

Another idea could be "illuminaries made of Plastic milk bottles ( with a 4" hole in the side) or paper bags. A small candle sitting in a sand base works well for "patio" or walkway lights.

I think the problem with the solar lights is going to be getting the solar to the light....really big trees, of course we could set them out near the volley ball area and let them charge during the day...whadda think Kevin? Doug

That's kinda what I was thinking about the solar lights. However, I did find some at HF for 5.99 each, seems to be the cheapest solution so far and it eliminates the need for a car battery and wiring job. They will run up to 8 hours on a charge, takes 10 hours to charge them.
Any other ideas out there? 8)

Any of those Malibu lights would work since they are 12V. If you are hooking up at a car battery, you can get lower wattage bulbs. I think glowsticks would be fine. Maybe everybody could pitch in and bring a few.

Doesn't any one bring flash lights camping any more?

Have a good day.

I'm with Gage on this one. Heck, we keep trying to make these little trailers like our homes with tons of lighting (mood lights, porch lights, etc., etc., etc.), entertainment centers (Televisions, DVD players, stereos, etc., etc., etc.), full kitchens and bathrooms. I keep expecting someone to mention they'd like to have an exercise room in one! I just keep trying to remind myself "it's just a glorified tent, afterall"! I could easily build a trailer that'll end up looking like a museum quality piece of fine furniture (raised panel doors, hand cut dovetailed drawers, hidden drawer slides, 20 hand-rubbed coats of finish, etc., etc., etc.).....................but I'm going to be camping in the wilds with the thing, for gosh sakes. What bear is going to care?!?!?!?! I'm all for the "flashlight" thing! Told my girlfriend there will be a couple of lights in the cabin. If she needs to be able to see more than they will illuminate, she can use a flashlight. Thanks for making your point, Gage.

I agree with Gage on the flashlight issue as well, matter of fact I believe it was Gage who suggested that I turn my flashlight OFF while we were walking across the campground at the dam gathering a few months ago. "turn that %@* thing off"
However, to clarify my original post for Chris and others, there is a potentially hazardous staircase seperating the two levels at Pamplin Grove that I was hoping to supply more permanent lighting than a flashlight for the safety of everyone who attends the event.
BTW, Chris, how's that trailer coming along? ;)

Kevin...I'm a firm believer in those lightweight headlamps like the Zipka from Petzl Zipka. Little spendy but strategicly placed, a person could sure light up a staircase with one. They are pretty handy for everything from brushing your teeth, to the outhouse, or bushwacking your way home at night after losing your way.

My wife, on the other hand, prefers the heft of a 6 cell mag light. Woe to the critter that ever spooked her while she had that thing in her hand!

I know you were kidding but at $15 for 10units that last 12 hrs glow sticks are cheap and foolproof. No worry about charging batteries or stringing wire. No worries about open flames. And if a few get broken or stolen who cares.
Commandant Louis Joseph Lahure has a singular distinction in military history - he defeated a navy on horseback. Occupying Holland in January 1795, the French continental army learned that the mighty Dutch navy had been frozen into the ice around Texel Island. So Lahure and 128 men simply rode up to it and demanded surrender. No shots were fired.
