I had this exact square D setup. Even though I had a main in the outside box, I had to buy a main breaker for the inside knockout you refer to. It actually makes a pretty sweet setup. I was using my Honda 3000i and didn't have 220 to input, so I had to jumper the two legs of the input breaker. The other thing I did was mark all the breakers I wanted left on with a sticker so It would be easy to see in the dark with a flashlight.

Tommy, got good news and bad news. If your panel is like mine, you can add another main 150A breaker inside and in series with outside main (that's the good news). The reason they started putting the main shutoff outside in its own sub panel (I believe) was for Fire and Rescue so they could quickly disconnect without going in. The panel knockout comes out and a new 150A breaker goes in and then you can use the interlock with a 2 pole breaker at the top. It is minimal rewiring if you are already using that position. Bad news is the breaker is about $125.00, but with interlocks and etc., we could do the whole job for around $225. It will be code and safe. I can help you do it. I think I will do mine also so I am code compliant for whole house as well as my small gen transfer switch. edit....not bad news anymore.. just got the breaker on Amazon for $67.00 and I ordered the interlock... both for $119. All you 'd then need is your connector box . Probably all less than $200.00 Note. the interlock kit will take 4 to 6 weeks to come in according to Amazon. We should just plan a Saturday and do yours when they come in. Just make sure your panel is Square D / Homeline or QO and looks like mine. It should work.

The new breaker will bolt down down and incoming wires will go in the breaker's terminals in the same fashion. Litterally a 10 minute job.



This is my panel. You can see the knockout for the inside master breaker. I need to move the red gen breaker wires to the top and the 2 pole breaker at the top's wires down to bottom and then install the mechanical interlock previously shown.. and we call it done. You can see the lockout I have on my gen breaker so no one turns it on either way on accident. I just have to make sure to go outside and disconnect main and put the lock on it before before that is flipped. It is manual and not exactly code since it is possible to have both on at same time if you don't know what you are doing. The interlock prevents that.

The new breaker will just bolt in and be in series with outside breaker so that is actually good for the Fire Rescue folks if ever needed and double protected.

This is my back feed inlet I installed before the 2006 hurricanes. Once I have the interlock installed, I will need to change the gender so I don't have to use a suicide cord. I did the opposite gender so if someone turned on the breaker with the main, the exposed contacts would not be hot. It is under the front entry way . Gen locks down with chain.

Mine was a QO series. You definitely want to make sure you buy the right parts. Homeline or QO. I think I paid about $75 for my main breaker.

Mine actually is QO... I better check that right now on being the correct parts. Tx. BTW.. Amazon has the breaker for $67.00. Much more expensive elsewhere.


Edit.... these are for Homeline and QO series.. phew! Tommy, look at the sticker on the inside door for the type. You will see that there. I have bought Homeline before when I replace a breaker... apparently they are the same form factor and work the same.

Wow I almost posted the same thing yesterday but ran out of time. I was looking at the 200 amp version as I did not know any better. 150 amp is even cheaper.

I will still have to order the cord. Whether its 50 or 100 feet, 8 4 or 10 4. another 150-200 bucks there.

That's a long wait for the interlock kit but I could utilize the set up in an emergency by throwing the main outside in the mean time.

No transfer switch for me. Just cant afford it. Let you know when it all comes in. It will take some time for me to run the cord. Not sure exactly how I want to run it. See you tomorrow 9-noonish. Still much debris to clean up.

Tommy, Amazon just notified me the Interlock Kit will ship early next week. You may get lucky too. If not, you can have mine in the meantime if you are in a hurry. I think we are done for this season, but I have alternatives in any case.

Yes, assuming your Panel is the SquareD OD or Homline type. Did you look to see if yours is or at least looks like mine inside?

It looks like yours and I have seen square D breakers in there BUT I better wait until I get home to be 100% certain.

Probably wont lose power again for years though.

Scary how barren the shelves are still at the local Publix. Meat and dairy especially. Makes me really rethink bulking up on supplies next time. More chef boyrdee ravioli by the case. Stuff like that. We all got sick from some Dinty More beef stew. Never eat that again.

Dinty Moore Beef Stew with Tabasco sauce... come on Tommy, it don't get much better than that! One of my old camping staples. :-) Chef BoyRdee Raviolis are a close second though.

I am headed to Sebring Florida Saturday morning to put plywood and tarps over a mobile home that had part of the roof torn off. I have a flatbed trailer loaded with materials. The local Lowes store phone and web page are out of commission today when I tried to contact them today so I suspect supplies will be hard to find locally. I will probably buy more stuff along the way as I travel from Indiana.

Contractors and help with labor will be hard to find.

Great advice... I had not yet worried about that aspect .... but lots of other worries.

Does anybody know about fuel availability?
