Hope the above pictures helps...when I secured the horizontal 2x2s to the vertical 2x2s, I simply drilled thru the vertical 2x2 into the horizontal one - no predrilling. However, at the other end where I had to toenail the horizontal 2x2 to the vertical one, I predrilled so I wouldn't split the wood.
So I hope I'm not simplifying it too much, but at a T joint, I did not predrill; at a toenail joint, I did.
After 2+ years and 30 some odd thousand miles (not kms), no failures.
As far as cabinets are concerned, I used 1/2 plywood and simple butt joints (never seen, so no esthetic value in doing anything fancier).
