It's my fault--my son's turtle Chuck is dead.

Postby Ira » Tue Jul 11, 2006 2:53 pm

We got him like 3 years ago at a street festival, and Timmy (10) has taken great care of him. He was one of those little glades turtles--TINY--the kind that hardly ever lives past 6 months. (I've killed DOZENS throughout my childhood.)

Two weeks ago, Chuck's eyes started bulging, and I buy drops just for this. It doesn't get any better, but I don't take him to the vet.

Time of death is last night around midnight.

I was totally asleep, so my 10-year-old text messages my wife's phone (she was at work) with the cryptic message "Chuck is dead." (Yes, Timmy can do a text message, but I can't.) He was crying his eyes out last night all depressed while daddy blissfully slept.

My wife told me this morning when I went to pick her up, and he was asleep when I left for work. Also, I couldn't attend the funeral because I had to GO to work.

I really feel awful about this.

It was a matter of a costly vet visit, or an EZ-Up, and I chose unwisely.
Here we go again!

Dont feel too bad. It was just Chucks time to go. Have you thought about getting Timmy a pet crab?

Ira, Ira, Ira--

What have we learned here? Have we learned priorities? Yes, Chuck lived to be a ripe ol' age - probably six times his expectancy, but Timmy probably doesn't understand that. How 'bout a nice marker for Chuck in the yard where his spirit can sun itself near some water? :relaxing:

Ira...My condolences to you and Timmy. That reminds me...my daughter's gecko (of 5 years) is still in the freezer, in a small box/coffin, after I couldn't bury him last winter in the backyard pet cemetary when the ground was frozen. He was a good gecko. I guess it is time for a ceremony.......BOTT

Ira, I hate to tell you this, but a vet can't do much for a tiny turtle..first off, it's hard to get a thermometer up it's real small butt, and then, try giving a shot through a shell..oy vey

I'm sure Timmy will get over it in a week or 12.

You could rip off all the crab stuff on your tear, paint it green and rename it Chuck. You could have Chuck cast in bronze and use him for door handles. You could memorialize him for all time. Then your son would probably want a pet chicken to replace the turtle . . . okay, keep the crab theme.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Every one of these replies deserves an award!

I gave the kid 20 bucks, so he feels better now.

I know that's not in the parenting magazines, but it worked.

I fell terrible, my dog died and I carry him around in a tin can.
Do you have another $20 for me?

Since I live on the other coast you can save postage and send only $10 and I will be smiling again. ;)

You ever wonder how the magazines get accepted as the experts when they don't even know the simple stuff like this?

Ok forget the 20. There's a cat beating up on my cat that is gonna die. Send me a 22 bullet and I will save a lot more than 20. Already cost me over 200 vet bills.

D*@M thing sits just out of rock trowing distance and waits till I go in to harrass my cat.

Ohh Send me the 22 and I'll send you a do it yourself chinese dinner

A "stray" cat killed one of my lovebirds two years ago. (I breed them in the backyard.)

God bless HF and their animal traps, because although I love animals, ANY cat that comes in my backyard gets trapped and goes for a ride.

The alligators gotta eat too, you know?
