Travel Log Book

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Travel Log Book

Postby DWT77 » Wed Mar 27, 2019 1:18 pm

I was thinking of creating a travel log book in a windows excel spreadsheet. That way it could automatically total my teardrop mileage ect....

How many keep a log book of their travels?

What all information do you log?

Date
Mileage
Campground or GPS Coordinates if off grid
Fuel

What other info is good to log?

Highlights (backed up with photos when possible), and regrets.

There is a side road at Rocky Mountain NP that opens around 4 July, and I've missed driving on it both times I've been there.

We had to cut a camping trip to the area around Mesa Verde short a few years ago, and there are a dozen things around there we want to do someday.

Every region we go, we learn about local places we would like to explore and things we would like to do, but have run out of time, or the particular experience was closed while we were there.

With our logged "regrets", the next time we plan a trip through that area, we have a list of options to choose from.

Of course, one can also log good/bad places to eat, cell phone coverage at particular campsites, availability of gasoline, general cleanliness of campsites and picnic areas, quality of grocery stores, weather conditions, and the like.

Just a little paper notebook - start miles, stops along the way, end point mileage. Notes about things to look up and research. People we have met. Not insane doing it, just little 'oh yeah, need to make a note of that' and sometimes it is updated after the trip. I will type it up and put it as a text file in my picture folder of the trip.

I use a wire bound pad. I love data.
Dates, fees, weather notes, wildlife seen (especially birds). Mileage, nights I slept in the trailer (cumulative), campsite numbers for future reference if applicable, boondock location. Contact info for people I might want to camp with. Tweakes I should make to the trailer - gear modifications I should make and any other stuff I deem memorable. I find it useful to look at.
I track expenses with software.
This should be useful once dementia takes hold.

Thanks for the feedback!!

I liked the idea of taking a picture of the campsite, spot, ect.... Turns out there are several ways to insert a picture in excel.

I could even add the link to the campsite or places of interest.

So I started looking for a way to insert a picture into a comment on the spreadsheet.

Here is a video to put one in the comments.

We are going to do a log book. We are planning on making a template in Pages (Mac) then bring that into a 3 ring binder for on the trip to gather the info. Then that info will be put into a Pages doc which will be imported in to Blurb. Blurb is a book printing website that I have used a few times. We will print a book for each year. Each trip can have the info page and photos to go with it.Weekend trip can be two pages and longer trips can be more to add more photos.

Info we are planning so far.

Name of trip
Start date
End date
Total days
Milage start
Milage end
Total miles
Offroad miles
Who we went with

Day 1
Location From -> To
Activities
Who we met
Camp location Long Lat
Elevation
Temps Highs and lows
Info like, how many can fit, shade, tables, bathrooms,

Day 2
Location From -> To
Activities
Who we met
Camp location Long Lat
Elevation
Temps Highs and lows
Info like, how many can fit, shade, tables, bathrooms,

Summary of trip

I'm sure we'll come up with more as time goes on.
