Well, no pictures or vids on this next one...yet. I'm in the design stage with some R&D thrown in. Since the beginning of this build, I have been picturing a frosted glass divider at the end of my cook top to separate the Galley from the Aft Cabin and to stop splatter from getting on our TV. All the while, I have been thinking of a rectangle piece of frosted quarter inch plate glass. Just a simple thing.

My mind wanders...

Now I am picturing a quarter inch plate glass with a sweeping curve for flair (man I hate right angles) mounted in Birch with blacklit Amber LED's for illumination, with sandetched Mid-Century Atomic graphics that glow when you touch a switch. Following me so far?

If you have skills and experience in this type of thing, specifically the sand etching part, please feel free to comment! I could use a coach!

Oh, I guess I lied. Here's a pic of the Airbrush/Sand-Etcher I purchased and will possibly practice with tomorrow. Until just recently I didn't even know such a thing existed!

Acrylic can be blasted too, And it sure a lot easier to bend

Yes, something like that! The multiple colors are awesome! I went to the glass shop this morning and kicked around ideas. He said I would love the acrylic for about 6 months before I would begin to hate it. Apparently the more you clean it, the cloudier it becomes. Mine will be something much simpler and the sweeping curve will be cut, rather than bent.

I asked about having a piece like that made. The price... "Astro"nomical! So if it happens, it's going to be because I did it!

I've had the LED part figured out for awhile, and some urethane mounting ideas. I'm still working on the type of glass (apparently the lead in glass is what gives the edges that "green" color) so I'm trying to find glass without lead in order to get a crystal clear appearance, while also transferring the Amber light the best way possible to the edge and the etching.

Unnecessary for a home-built camper? Yep. Absolutely. But if I can, I will.
I mean, why not? I may decide this is well out of my skill-set and range-of-talent!

Now to do some sketches and see what I can come up with. Time for pencil, paper, headphones and some good Retrofuturistic Jazz! I'm thinking "1958 Les Baxter, Space Escapade" on vinyl sounds about right for inspiration!

The retro-futuristic juices were flowing this evening, which felt pretty good! I threw together some rough (ok, very rough) sketches and made a cardboard pattern for the piece. Still kicking around ideas for what I want to add and what I want to leave out. Since the Astro is so close to being finished, I had forgotten how fun the design part is...

I wanted to practice, but didn't have any scrap glass. So, a Ball jar will have to suffice. A few more trial runs and I think I will go for the real thing!

I used vinyl paint mask. The gun works exactly like an air brush. My only wish, (complaint lol) would be that I have more control. There is no adjustments like I'm used to. It is very precise, as it has a very fine tip which is great for detail work. But I will also have thicker lines and a bigger tip or more control of the output would be nice. I think I can do it though...

I won't confess to anything, but my Mom found some silver/gray vinyl fabric and made me one of those space suits for a Halloween costume one year. How is it the men needed full space suits and helmets, while the women could wear body suits?

Any way, great stuff! You are a real artist.
