Solar Water Heater

Postby Dahlia47 » Wed May 29, 2019 10:26 pm

Do any of you have the solar water heaters made from PVC? What are your thoughts? How hot do they get? Are they easy to make? How did you attach it? Anything you would do different?

I have seen them and I am thinking about making one for my travel trailer. I don't expect the water to get too hot. But then again this is Texas. Maybe the water wont get too hot during the winter? LOL!

I am planning on some long desolate trips. I am also looking some land that doesn't have any water, electric or sewer. The more I make the travel trailer rely on solar and gravity, the better.

I love my little travel trailer! :)

Tony has a great idea that he uses for showers, if he doesn't reply send him a PM. Even though I have hot water I'll probably use his idea also just not with the solar part.

A) You be darn careful with a passive solar water heater, especially in your area. That water can come out not just hot, but DAMN hot.

That said, you could have a quick & easy heater in just a 50' garden hose that rolls up. Lay it out on the ground, or your roof, and pump water through it. Old SOL will do the rest. Another option is a roof-mounted plastic gas tank from somewhere like Speedway. Mount and plumb it, fill it at or near your destination, and it'll get hot and gravity feed to where you need it. The pressure might not be the greatest, but you could always augment that with a low cost pump.

( I have a 10 gallon tank in my T-bucket that came from Speedway. Link -> https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Black-Po ... 36755.html )

This is what we use and it works well.

Sometimes we have to dump a pot of boiling water in it if the sun hasn't had time to work its magic. Simple is good.

On our recent 20-nighter in the SW, filling something like this –-from time to time-- would have been a challenge.

:thinking:
