Should I bother?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Should I bother?

Seeking advice from the older and wiser.

Back in late may, I accepted a position with a local furniture company as a crate builder, worked 3 days and over the following weekend my grandfather passed away and I had to miss 2 days following the memorial day holiday to deal with the funeral and family issues.

I had called in that Tuesday morning, only to receive the voice mail of both owners when I called. After a few tries I decided to leave a message letting them know I had a death in the family and wouldn't be in until thursday of that week.

Long story short, that Thursday morning I didn't have a job anymore, as "We had been quite busy and the extra help wasn't needed".

Now, as if that wasn't discouraging enough, I've never recieved any paycheck, nor any call asking for me to come and pickup a check or any compensation for my work.

Mind you this is only 25.5hrs at $10/hr so $255 minus taxes and etc.

So, my question is, is it even worth pursuing it for such a small amount of money?

Not only, but you should also file a complaint with whatever labor relations board Texas has. Stuff happens, and they are probably covered by saying the "extra" help wasn't needed. Shows your job wasn't considered permanant.

You earn it you should get it and make them real aware that they are late. Via the labor board.

I'm sure your state has laws pertaining to payment for services rendered. Ask your local unemployment office about how to file a complaint for non payment. Good Luck.

BG,

I know it's kinda off topic, but having just started a new job myself, I can say that the first 90 days are the most critical. They are sizing you up, and checking to see if you fit in.

When something happens that requires you to take a few days off, it's definitely trying for the employer. If the employer doesn't understand, then you don't want to work for him. Look for a better job somewhere else.

As for the pay owed you... as a matter of principle, go after it. But make your primary focus finding a new job.

Sorry about your Grandfather BG. Also sounds like those guys were not someone you would have liked to work for anyway. If your state has statutes regarding bereavement, they might have been violated, however, they would probably have a case for improper notification, they don't want to make it easy to call in no doubt. Irregardless, they owe you the dough, go get em!!
