Hello from Oklahoma

I have been thinking about building a teardrop or small camper of some type for a couple of years now. I have finally got my wife on board with the idea ("as long as it doesn't look to redneck"). I own an older popup camper that is in need of some major TLC, but instead of doing that I am thinking I will strip it and use what ever parts I can to start my build. All of the mechanical items work so I think that will help keep my build less expensive. I do have one major question before I start. Has anyone had issues with campsites not letting you camp in a home built trailer?

I'm in North Texas but a frequent traveler and camper in OK.

You will not have any problems with a home built camper in most of the state or national parks, or the Wildlife Management Areas in OK, or in dispersed camping areas of BLM land and national forests. You would likely be rejected at private upscale RV campgrounds and they are even picky about factory built trailers and RVs over 10 years old.

Has anyone had issues with campsites not letting you camp in a home built trailer?

That was last weeks campsite. Nobody was asking questions.

But we've been intimidated.



We boondock about 90% of the time but the public campgrounds we've used don't blink.

I am still in the early planning stages. I just didn't want to put all the time and effort into this build and then not able to camp with it at RV parks which is where I will be doing most camping when my family is with me. We plan to use the popup the rest of this season while i do my planning then start my build this fall.

Not as far as I would like to have been. I have the trailer frame finished and the floor down right now. Bought some western cedar earlier this week and have it drying out right now. Ever time I think I will have time to work on it someone has been wanting me to build them a longbow and there goes my free time. Not complaining as I truly enjoy building the bows. I figure I will have it finished sometime in the next ten years.

I've worked with it on a couple of canoes and a few other projects now,,, But.

I hope you realize Western Red Cedar can be toxic to many and take precautions
with using it and the resulting dust. Personally I must use a powered respirator
and vacuum down before removing the respirator... It causes me to have horrible
Flu like symptoms for several days if I'm careless.

Yes sir I am aware.
I work with a lot of woods that can be downright nasty building longbows. Cocobolo as an example of one. I have learned no matter what woods I work with I am wearing my respirator and take appropriate precautions. Different woods can cause some nasty reaction and some of them are long term always better to be safe than sorry. Knock on wood I haven't had any reaction to the woods I use yet and I would like to keep it that way.
