Tony, what a beautiful 'scenic' backdrop setting behind your trailers in this pic - last September, when I drove to meet up with the trailer group in Sula, Mt that was doing the Tearjerkers Crawl though your area - leaving my trailer at the campground in Sula, I drove over the hill to Salmon, Id. meeting them for the drive back and YES!!! it was one "great beautiful" drive back north = liked it so well, when I take off for my next cross-state run to Texas this June, the plan is to again make the run up Hy 12 to Lolo, than south back though your area down to Twin Falls. If I see an "Orange" TD, I'll be waving a "Hello" your direction (Now I understand 'why' they make hunter's wear orange :roll ) (( Sorry for the 'change of subject' hijack))

So, hijacking the hijacked thread: It occurred to me that we do have some aluminum diamond plate to weigh for comparison



That's a fender from the trailer--less than 1/8" inch thick. Borrowing Shelly's dress makers tape, it seems to be 12 x 61.5 inches, or 5.125 square feet, and weighs in at 4 lbs 12.5 oz. If I did the math correctly, that puts it at 0.93 lbs/square foot, which compares to the 1/8 inch thick rubber diamond plate at 0.9 lbs/square foot. Pretty much the same weight.

Think the rubber still wins, since we can apply it to the slightly rounded cargo door, and hopefully wrap it around the 3/8 inch radius between the front and side of the teardrop.

BTW, I wish we'd had the option of getting black anodized aluminum diamond plate fenders. Not only will black fenders go with the rest of the black trim (doors and rubber diamond plate), but following Shelly and the empty trailer home in the evening, I was nearly blinded by the Sun's reflection. At some point, I plan to either buy new fenders, or anodize these.

Here is BASF's response

Our MasterWeld 948 may be an option.

However please note a test area with the MasterWeld 948 would be required to verify proper adhesion.

Additionally we would recommend slightly abrading or “de-glossing” the surfaces of both the SBR Rubber and the epoxy for best performance.

We would like to attach a styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) diamond plate sheet (manufactured by Rubber-Cal) to the front and sides for protection against stones and other road debris. Would you please recommend a BASF adhesive (or tape) that will bond SBR rubber to epoxy? Thank you!

Looks affordable. We'll see what 3M says, and may test the Masterweld 948.

THE ANSWER

This product is great for use in the outdoors. It is made from reclaimed rubber and has a very high rate of resistance to UV and ozone. While prolonged exposure to sunlight will not compromise the physical integrity of the product, over time you may just see some fading and spotting in the color. I didn't realize it but evidently I wasn't asking the entire company, but only their automotive aftermarkets division. I'll try again, except for their Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division I need to state a company name and industry to ask the question. We'll see what happens...

Here is the response from 3M. Much more expensive than the BASF recommendation, and 3M is recommending epoxy glues. So I think we'll first experiment with BASF's adhesive and the rubber sample (when it arrives).

Please note none of our adhesives or tapes are suggest for use outside a moving vehicle (including trailers) unless the bond line is designed and tested for required safety requirements by a qualified engineer.
I believe that the DP125 Gray or 2216 Gray (if longer worklife is desired) would be the ones to consider.

Finally got around to trying the Masterweld 948 with the sample of rubber diamond plate. Sadly, the first test was a complete failure:



Weighted the rubber on the scrap of plywood covered in fiberglass and epoxy for about 20 hours. The glue appears to have bonded well with the epoxy, but the rubber pealed right off. It is still tacky in the middle, which may be part of the problem--Masterweld 948 takes air to cure, and, of course, the rubber and epoxy block the air. Perhaps waiting a few days (weeks?) would have helped, but the part that cured around the border also didn't prevent the rubber from pealing right off.

I did prep the glass/epoxy side by first sanding the gloss off (as I did with the teardrop), and then using warm soapy water and a scotch-pad to take off any amine blush that might be present. I did no preparation on the rubber sample. So, I think I'll try sanding that surface to see what happens.

3M recommended an epoxy glue, which is entirely cost prohibitive. (This was supposed to be about the same cost as an aluminum diamond plate.)

Okay, likely my last post on this subject. Since I didn't scuff the rubber, as recommended by the BASF rep, last time, I sanded off the old glue, scuffed it with 60 grit sandpaper, and re-glued it. I put a block of scrap wood on top, and a fairly heavy vise on top of that. Left it for a day, and then promptly peeled the rubber right off. Masterweld 948 is clearly not the right adhesive for this application!



To protect our front cargo door, we are now considering using Monstaliner over the plastic door. Later, we will likely buy an aluminum plate to protect the side of the front of the teardrop on the other side from the door.
