14awg seem pretty heavy for a reading light. 12 volt? What is the amperage draw? Are they LED? My reading lights, 12v LEDs, use 20awg.

Not sure if it would work, but, beveling a piece before you rip the thin strips might create several widths that give you a choice of final widths. There's youtube vids on simple jigs to cut consistent thin strips that you could use.
