I have one of those as well. The key to using it in a breeze is staking the bottom close enough that it maintains tension on the poles, and of course a sturdy connection to the top. I have the gas cylinders holding up my hatch, so I also have to insert a pole to make that rigid. But you are right, in a stiff wind it’s not the answer.

Just, "Kelty Tailgater." But it'll be for naught. I picked up a second one on eBay a couple of years ago. You might try a notification (or whatever that's called) for them there in case one pops up.

I've never heard back from Kelty. I probably didn't have the right office contact. They are missing the boat. Or someone is.

There are several companies making similar products but nothing quite to the bar as what Kelty used to make.

A startup could sure find a niche here.

But I'm damn glad to see you're at this point in your project.

Anyone have any thoughts on whether this will clear a TD galley hatch or provide the type of shelter one would want back there? I am new to this.
I saw this in a video somewhere alongside a scamp type trailer. Not the all around coverage I would hope for but it seems to have decent reviews regarding wind resistance. Something I am interested in having in a tarp. I always replace the stakes provided with these sorts of things. One nice thing is REI has a one year return policy if it doesn’t work.

Ligher, than an EZ Up, and certainly not as easy to set up, but a simple Ozark Trail 9x13 screen room would work, but for me, I am willing to deal with hauling extra weight to not have to deal with all the bending and stooping involved in a non instant setup model...

An Ozark Trail 12x12 tarp shelter with poles would give you pretty much what you need, but not exactly free standing so there is that.

Its a tarp, it will go as high as you want it. But it won't block the wind from your stove.

I decided to purchase this to try it out. I got it through REI and they have an awesome return policy. I set it up just using weights so did not get it as taunt as necessary. It was very windy at the time.
The pluses were it is very well made, a small package and the materials used are heavy duty. The upright pole has an elastic type cord covered with braided cable running through it and stays together. It was easy for me to put up by myself in just a couple of minutes. Also with the lid of my stove raised the side was low enough to block the wind. The negatives were the straps needed to be adjusted when the galley hatch is lowered and it didn’t work over the side door as an optional location as it didn’t afford any headroom. Also I am not excited by the thought of the straps rubbing on the exterior urethane so it is a pass. I may just have to go with an ez up type cover with a side panel though I was really trying to avoid that.
BTW that is the top of my flagpole above the awning…

I know this is an older thread, 2 years old but just wanted to post if others were still looking. Kelty has brought back their "Backroads Shelter". I just bought one recently thru their Anniversary Sale for 25% off, good deal. They also carry another model that's not as elaborate but cheaper..
