Registering the trailer in CA!

So I’ve got my trailer about 95-99% done, and I have yet to register it. I built mine on top of a NT 5x8 aluminum frame that came with the statement of origin and I saved all my receipts so I can take that in too.

However, the field offices in California have just opened up within the last few weeks and they aren’t taking any new appointments! Does anyone have any experience with other methods of registration that could be done (hopefully without too much social contact)

I've heard VT can be done by mail, so long as you plan to not go there.

Maine is also very common for trailers.

I also live in CA, I've registered a NT trailer before but I wonder... are you looking to just register the trailer itself, or somehow register the camper part too? I was thinking once you register the trailer (only) you're done, but maybe I'm not thinking it all the way through.

I had no issues registering my previously unregistered, 70+ year old teardrop in CA. The DMV inspected it, issued a VIN number, and applied a permanent sticker on the frame. 3 weeks my new plates arrived. Cost most of $300, but other than that, painless.

Just make an appointment for the inspection, and wait it out. I had bogus plates on my trailer (that read "1948") on my trailer for most of a year, and nobody ever pulled me over.

Thanks guys! Right now it would be pretty hard to remove the cabin from the frame without damaging it, so it looks like bringing in the whole thing will have to be done when I register it.

I might look to see if I have any friends with trailers who could let me borrow their plates

If you have AAA membership, you can take it to one of the local offices. I've taken both of my Harbor Freight trailers there to register them w/o issues.
