I had no issues registering my previously unregistered, 70+ year old teardrop in CA. The DMV inspected it, issued a VIN number, and applied a permanent sticker on the frame. 3 weeks my new plates arrived. Cost most of $300, but other than that, painless.
Just make an appointment for the inspection, and wait it out. I had bogus plates on my trailer (that read "1948") on my trailer for most of a year, and nobody ever pulled me over.
