Just some random stuff from working on things. I enjoy working with my hands still.
A couple of knives, this one was made from an old file.
160427

D2 steel & ironwood grips
160425

Leaf spring steel chopper, a bit heavy but it cuts well enough
160424

A new 30-06 for my son, Howa barreled action, Boyd's stock, shoots well enough
160426

Mini bike just for fun. Harbor Freight motor with Arias piston, Isky cam, Mikuni carb, ported head & a "few" other mods. 70 mph is fast enough on this thing. Was 6.5 hp, now "about" 18hp...
160423

Not doing as much photography now, but enjoying New Mexico & the cooler weather...
160428

Lake Maloya last week after a bit of snow. This is our drinking water in Raton

Today I made a raised bed garden for the front of my West Philadelphia row house. The front of the house faces south so it will get good light!

Yesterday was the trip to Home Depot for supplies.
Image

Materials on the back deck ready to go.
Image

Four sides constructed.
Image

Tacking down galvanized roofing on the back sides.
Image

The sides look like this on the side that faces out.
Image

Four sides connected.
Image

Bench seating installed.
Image

Corners drilled and receiver pipes installed for hoops.
Image

Closeup of a corner.
Image

Hoops installed for shadecloth or clear plastic sheeting, depending on season.
Image

The center bar is held on with stainless U-bolts.
Image

The raised bed measures approximately 4’x4’x26” tall. If anyone wants to replicate this, the materials I used were:

7, 8’ long pressure treated 2x4’s, cut into:
- 8, 4’ sections (horizontal part of frames)
- 12, 19” sections (vertical part of frames)
- 2, 26” sections cut in half longitudinally (inside corner supports/rabbets)
2, 8’ long pressure treated 2x6’s, cut into:
- 2, 54” sections (bench top)
- 2, 40” sections (bench top)
2, 8’ long corrugated galvanized roofing panels (26” wide), cut into:
- 2, 42” sections (short sides)
- 2, 44.5” sections (long sides)
2.5” decking screws
1.25” roofing screws
1, 12’, 3/4” inner diameter PVC pipe, cut into:
- 4, 2’ lengths (receiver pipes)
- 1, 4’ length (center support)
2, 10’ 1/2” inner diameter PVC pipes (hoops)
4 stainless steel U bolts

Tools I used were:

jig saw (chop saw would have been better but don’t have one)
drill & drill bits (so wood wouldn’t split)
impact driver
tape measure
sharpie marker
tin snips

I built the box in the back yard but I will take the top off and detach all 4 sides and move it to a concrete pad in the front yard (south side of the house) after I get the soil. I’ll be lining the box with a strong garden fabric to keep the soil in. The soil will not be in contact with the pressure treated lumber because of the galvanized walls. I didn’t want to contaminate the soil with the wood treatment, but I still wanted the box to last more than a few years.

It takes about a cubic yard of soil to fill it, which is an order of magnitude cheaper to buy at a local farm than at a big box store. Also, I was excited to have a compost delivery last week. We subscribe to a compost bucket pickup once a week, and this delivery is the fruit of our labor. I’ll be mixing that in with the soil before we plant.

We are thinking tomatoes and peppers will do well in the new garden.

EDIT: I tested out the canopy today and 3 hoops works better than 2 hoops with a crossbeam. I can still add a crossbeam if I need it.

Both My C-max Energi and Chevy Volt have EVSE plugs... which for the last two years have been plugged in to the shed/garage to charge them up. The shed won’t fit a car, but it does have power. My solution to where to keep the business end has been simply to hang it on the door handle.Image

That is until today: Image

I bought the plastic doohickey to Holster the plug, and had a nostalgic fit when painting it.

I like to always have a few active projects going. One of my most recent projects was a custom table for my Primo Kamado. In truth my wife said I needed to finish it and get it out of the garage before I could start my tiny trailer build :)

It's 100% cedar on industrial casters. The main structure is 4x4 stock with hidden fasteners. The large side tables provide all of the room I need for cooking outside. It's roughly 6' long and 2' deep.

Unfortunately downsizing the photos robs them of much detail.

Another mini bike

Postby noseoil » Sat Aug 08, 2020 8:19 am

Found this in Raton, a good deal for $25 but it needs a "little bit" of work to make it run. I've stretched the frame 8" for stability, added a bigger motor with a few mods (milled the head .030" to raise the compression & ported it a little, 22mm Mikuni, header, heavier valve springs), installed a hydraulic braking system, new tires & a "few" more things. I still need a few more parts to get it running, but it's getting closer to being finished, perhaps next week I'll be able to run it for the first time & report back on top speed. I'm hoping for about 60 mph with this motor, but we'll have to see how it goes. It's a milder cam than the red bike's Isky Black Mamba, so it might not run up on top end quite as well.

Nice looking Catio
We too made a Catio last week for the 10 year old inside cat my wife adopted a couple months ago.
It's attached to an old wiener dog house I made years ago.
The side door is for cleaning and if we want to close it off at sometime.
It has easy access through two flap doors from the laundry room and old dog house.
We used 2" x 3" sturdy wire so she could enjoy the outdoors.
The dog house now holds a cat box for her.
Last night something outside spooked her so much :frightened:she came ripping into the house, up and down the stairs, around and around until she calmed down.
:D Danny

I made a disk sander spin the wrong way ;) imagine when you forget.
Platten sucked (bent) so slack it is.
Someday; I will find a knife sharpener that works.
