Confused about Hub Face measurement for custom trailer

I'm having a custom trailer built. It will be 2"x2" square tube, and the outside width of the frame is 62" wide. I want to put a #9 Dexter torsion axle on it, but I'm confused about what to tell them for the Hub Face measurement.

How do I measure the Hub Face, on a new trailer when I don't yet have anything to measure?

You figure out what you want it to be, based on frame rail location, wheel width and offset, tire width (if wider than wheel), etc.

Here's what I order for a 60" wide cabin sitting on a 59.5" chassis frame:

#9 Dexter Torflex axle, downrated to 1600 pounds
• Start Angle: 22.5” down
• Trailer width: 59.5”
• Hub face: 74”
• Hub diameter: 6.5”
• Bolt Pattern: 5 on 4-1/2” with standard studs
• Lubrication: EZ Lube

You should be able to figure it out from there.

But what is catching my eye is your 62 inches. Is that so you can put a Queen mattress inside?

Yes, exactly. My walls will be 1" thick, and I want a full 60" usable width inside the camper

Well... My cabin is 60" wide on the outside and the walls are an 1-1/8" thick. A super-comfortable 60" 8" foam mattress from the Foam Factory fits inside just fine.




Since I nearly worship 5' x 5' sheets of Baltic birch, I build 60" wide. It would certainly be an issue if you were sheathing with aluminum. With this last build, I glassed the roof with 60" wide 4 oz. cloth before I applied the Monstaliner.

Are you saying 60" foam mattress squashes down to 57 & 3/4" with no dramas?

You need to know what you plan to run for wheels and tires - at least ballpark tire width - as well as clearance to the frame.
Use tire width, wheel offset/backspacing, and clearance to work out where the hub face needs to be. With that, you can work back to determine the width of the axle, hub face to hub face.
