Did you use your galley sink?

For those of you who have a sink. Do you really use it all that much? Would you install one again if you had it to do over?

I will have access to one for a new build. Yet I am having trouble justifying several points. The loss of counter space. The required plumbing and loss of under sink room it requires. Plus onboard water container, water pump etc.

I've just always used an easily stowed plastic dish tub. Plus now I've moved to a spray bottle of soapy dishwater and a spray bottle of clear water. Get's the dishes clean as can be. Uses almost no water. Creates minimal grey water too. I just keep a 5gal water jug in the tow vehicle with drinking water. I draw required water for whatever from there. Worked for me.

Am I missing something if I don't install one?

My sink:

- Makes it easier to collect and dispose of used (gray) water, especially now that we aren't supposed to dispose of it on the forest floor.
- Gives me a place to rinse dishes. (I wash in the pot I used to cook dinner and rinse in the sink.)
- Makes it easy to wet and squeeze a sponge or dish cloth without needing a dish pan of water.
- Put a cutting board (about the size of the sink) on top and you've gained back nearly all your counter space and you can use that instead of messing up your counter.
- With the cutting board on top, it makes a great place to hide breakfast/lunch utensils, etc until you're ready to clean them.
- Even if I didn't have a water tank and a hand pump faucet, I think I'd want the sink.
- But, it's definitely a personal preference, depending on how you cook and clean (and hide your dirty utensils. HaHa!)

Thanks for the tip about the cutting board over the sink. That is a great way to reclaim lost space. The utensil stash place until wash time is a good point to. I have all the parts to do a sink and water tank. Plus the room to do it in. Just never used one before, and appreciate your thoughts.

We're also interested in this question since we're still planning our build. When we tent camped, we obviously never had one, but we'd have to carry water to and from the spigots and drains at campgrounds to do dishes. We could work around it again, I guess, but water seems to be getting heavier as we age and our backs rebel! It seems like it would be convenient to have the sink and water system set up, especially if you're at a campground with full hookups (unless I'm missing something about that; never used them before!). However, you do lose the storage space. All these decisions are much harder than I thought they'd be!

Take a look at our water jug setup above. It's a water system that has worked well for us for many years. But we seldom camp in campground, when we do, it's a semi-remote USFS or BLM site with limited amenities. No hookups.

In the boonies, water is precious. Sinks drink water. There are ways to cleanup that use a tiny bit of water.

I have been finding that to be the case as well. What a curious thing! I thought the weight of inanimate objects was supposed to be relatively constant.

Nope... I'm in the camp that they waste counter and storage space and use too much water for boondocking.

But part of the beauty of the DIY teardrop world is the fact thate ever teardrop is unique.

Haven't used mine yet cause I don't have it plumbed in yet and the wife uses it for storage .
More stuff to secretly remove over the winter .

However, we brought 14 gallons of water and only used 6. So that's good I guess.
