Over capacity torsion axle

Not sure if I want to learn to build a trailer frame, I went to my local trailer sales and inquired about having one built. I got the quote back today and one comment on it was that electric brakes were not available on the 2000 lb torsion axle. To get the electric brakes, I would need to bump up to a 3500 lb axle. On the surface, it sounds Ok but, thinking about it, to gain the advantages of the torsion axle, The weight and the capacity need to be somewhat matched. Since the final weight should be under 1500 lb, is the 3500 lb a viable option or would I be better off skipping the torsion axle and go with the leaf springs? I don’t want to get the torsion axle if there is no performance benefit. I look forward to hearing what you all have to say. - Joe

the dexter 9 axle you can get brakes on and have it rated to 2k, Just 1 warning they are 8 weeks out per bend trailers, I am 4 weeks in

Your post does not mention a brand for the axle. That could explain the answer from your sales guy. Dexter makes a 2000# axle brakes. Search for Dexter #9 axle (2000#) and you can find a PDF with all kinds of information.

The salesman did not give me a brand but I think, from looking around, it is the Flexiride axle. They have the hydraulic brakes on the 2000 lb but not the electric.

Saltydawg, since I have not found anyone online other than Bend Trailer, I will work on plan B and follow your link.

Dexter/Torflex 1,000-2,200 lb axles can be equipped with 7" electric brakes.

You can add brakes to any of the suitable Timbren axle-less suspension systems, since they all use 3,500 lb spindles.
But if your builder is not familiar with Timbren suspension, they probably won't want to use it.

Timbren is very easy to add DIY so long as you have a suitable foundation frame rail.

Obviously only their 3500 line does not use 3500lb parts.

It is possible for some sizes to swap out the aeon rubber bits, e.g. can use those from the 5200lb axle-less on the 7000 model for a smoother ride with lower weight loads

then put the 7000lb aeons back in when you're fully loaded.

My authorized Flexiride axle dealer shipped my 2,000 lb axle with brakes. I had to assemble them along with the spindles and bearings and drums and back flanges but all the parts were in the box. Assembling the whole shebang took 30 minutes and I'd never done it before.
