Dexter Axel replacement

Postby Shadow Catcher » Tue Oct 13, 2020 7:37 pm

Our 12 + year old Dexter axel is sagging to the point where it needs to be replaced, The Flexride is the logical replacement and is adjustable for offset. Looking for alternates, Timbren is likely too much height for our purpose.

If you dont go offroad you could always go springs and put some shocks on it. I am sure the flexiride will sag too, but as you said its adjustable for the swing arm angle. Not that I think that will help when the rubber gets old.

I have been thinking of there is a way to weld a small plate on a torflex swing arm to fit a skinny airbag. Like these.

Aren't the rubber bits easily replaced as with Timbrens?

They have weight ratings that allow for three height levels,

including a drop-floor design where low clearance is desired.

I'd go with the KISS theory and replace the Dexter with another Dexter, particularly if your current axle is bolt on.

+1 on this suggestion; I replaced the Dexter on my 20+year pop-up conversion project with a new Dexter in kind. Very easy to change out (just four bolts) and the Dexter folks were outstanding to deal with. Excellent price and fast shipping. A Dexter should last 20 years or more.

Do you need to weld new brackets?

I am not but yes they are. I would not trust my welding. I learnd how to put the mistakes in so I could help welder when I failed their welds during an inspection.

Flexride axel installed. Sam the owner of Toledo Mobil Repair says he will be recommending them in the future.
