pop up canopies

Postby QueticoBill » Tue May 18, 2021 7:20 am

Not sure this fits but looking for a pop up 10 x 10 canopy for my wife to sell crafts at local farmers market. https://www.etsy.com/shop/DuffyRoads I see anywhere from $40 at walmart to many hundreds. Just looking for easy setup in a small village park. Short carry. Would like to hang wind chimes from edges. Would like to stay under $100 but something that will last a season or two would be best.

Thanks!

pop up canopies

Postby GerryS » Wed May 19, 2021 8:36 pm

I ran a kettle corn concession for several years. It’s a trade off….mine cost me about a grand including custom screen printing. Ozark trails cost 40 bucks.

If you take them down when winds are high….they last a long time. 3 years easily used from may hrough October every other weekend or so….

The ozarks trails last a couple weekends. It’s more of how much you want to invest. If you are hanging off of the Rods….he large professional grade tents are much much stronger.

One strong storm…..and either are goners. I would go to 12 to 15 mph and I’d be starting to worry.

Make sure you stake the legs down well…don’t use weights. I’ve seen tents get lifted and swung backwards, swinging the attached 30 to 50 pounds each weight swung like bags of cotton candy…..dropping said weights on the car behind the booth.

Wind is no joke

IMHO the "pop up" variety are simply ways to waste your $$$

for fleas n mkts the old stand by is the one made of electrical conduit w/ a blue tarp stretched over it

home made or vendor boughten connectors can be had for chump change

the conduit can be had at any hdwr/big box store anywhere if one gets bent

the tarps will last a season or 2 if you are careful w/ them

the components are small enuff for anyone to handle and don't have to be bundled for transport like a "pop up"

the "pop up" style WEIGHS A BUNCH and is hard for this old man to wag around

cast an eye about at your local venues for the connectors(many of our local venues have at least one vendor selling all the components)

the tarps can be had in a variety of colors on the interweb

just another point of view

* Just interjecting a kind word for my "cheapest" EZ Up canopy, bought in 2012 for <$50, and used for probably 100 days on my few trips a year, since then. It's been great for shade and protection from rain over the years, even standing up to 25-30 major T-storms in that time (I firmly attach it to my trailer, truck, and/or nearby trees, and even my heavy/filled coolers, for security against high winds). On my last trip, probably with the highest constant winds, day and night, and a couple of very heavy T-storms as well, it still did OK (though the sidewall was nearly useless). My pop-up privacy tent, lashed to the canopy any the trailer, completely collapsed.

* I carry a spare Ozark Trail canopy along (never has been out of the case, yet), expecting the EZ Up to fail at any time, but it survives (its' case is becoming threadbare in spots, but not the canopy, as far as I can tell). I'll continue using it as long as I can, but it's a bear for me to pop-up by myself (at 70, with bad back, etc.), so I ask others to help if available, though I can do it if necessary, using the trailer itself as a stanchion to work with. I'm still considering making a roll-up tarp that I can assemble in minutes (by myself), to take the place of canopy 1, when it finally gives up (or i do).

Re: pop up canopies

It is one short day a week - 9 to 3 - between Memorial Day and Labor Day. (Mirrors parking meters in this village - installed on Friday before Memorial Day, removed Tuesday after Labor Day. Amuses me.).

The only popup I ever handled was quite light and easy. But in fact I own the conduit, corner weldments, bungees, and tarp for a 16 x 16, so changing "roof" conduit - i think 5 pc - and tarp - Id have it - except now I'd have to set it up and take down each week - NOT!

Maybe besides light and inexpensive, easy for my wife to set up is key.

And thank you all for the help!!!!

I use the 13x13 vented roof models, they have a 10x10 inner frame, and a 2 tier roof that vents. Mine is called the EZ Up Pagoda and you will have a hard time finding them online as they are well out of production now. I got it in maybe 2007 I think.... Still going strong. As the fellow above showed, anchor down by tying to trees if you can. On the beach I use 5 gallon buckets filled with sand, and buried as anchor points.

On dry ground I anchor using dog tie out stakes.

https://www.harborfreight.com/18-inch-p ... p2EALw_wcB

Not sure what to do in a parking lot situation though. Probably a couple of 5 gallon buckets full of water at each corner.

Run the guylines down from the corners, do NOT apply pressure to the folding parts of the canopy, they WILL break.

The cheaper grade canopies are, well, cheaper. And all that entails, but the high dollar professional ones are nothing to write home about either. Overall wind is the main enemy here. Do whatever you can to anchor these down, and take them down QUICKLY should a wind come up.

Hanging items from the crossbar framing of these is never a good idea. If you have merchandise you want to display, make a display stand. I've made some for friends craft and band swag booths using 2x2s, 2x4s and wood lattic boards coating with generous amounts of latex paint. Use carraige bolts with wing nuts for removable feet so you can flat pack them...

Even though I am still in the tenting phase, your setup looks a LOT like mine. I set up my big 10x14 cabin tent opening under the canopy, I have 2 shade walls on the EZ Up, and then my Ensuite against the other side anchored out firmly. I use instant set, not pop up style though, so much more wind resistant. The pagoda roof does tend to scoop wind, but the upper vent lets it out. I wish they made a 10x10 2 tier vented roof model without the wind sucking pagoda extensions... And yes, my kitchen / dining is under the EZ Up since it is just the wife and I. And yes I know 10x14 is a huge tent for 2, but I wanted an instant set, with the blackout tech, and instant set, and to top it off, I had to have a cabin style with standing room. I was limited to, well... 2 tents. Coleman and Ozark Trail. The Ozark Trail oddly enough had more vertical walls, and a MUCH better review basis, plus the walls were way more vertical giving me more interior space... but I digress...

The color is only white on this one, but back to the original subject.

Ozark Trail offers a dual peak variant of its 10x10 straight leg instant canopy that might be up your alley.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trail- ... thena=true

The secondary peak is where the vent is, relieving wind stress on the canopy, and honestly, letting hot air rise and escape the canopy in the summer making it a LOT more comfortable.

If you look at the corners, this one is also designed / built with built in guy out points on the corners of the canopy fabric which will go a long way to help secure this thing...
