Bed length...

I was looking at Ryan's Wyoming Woody plans, which are great but I'm trying to figure out the exact length of the bed space. We are 6' and 6' 4" so wondering if we'll fit...

This is my method, when starting projects like this I build models using the scale of 1 inch equals 1 foot. Go to the toy store and buy 2 action figures, they are about 6" tall. You can use cardboard, but I use cereal boxes. I cut them 4"x8" or to the scale size of a sheet of plywood. If you want to account for wall thickness you will have to glue pieces together, but I usually ignore that. On a deer lease portable cabin I use cardboard, to account for the walls.

At first you can make the model using cellophane tape and a little glue. If you want to keep it, paper mache with a layer of newspaper and paint on the outside. Use watered down Elmer's white glue instead of the water and flour mix for the paper mache. By using a little tape I can change the design with just a simple craft knife cut.

If you want to construct the trailer, you can cut pine into the proper sizes on a table saw, or the easy way is to buy balsa wood at a craft store, Really want to get fancy, the body can also be made out of craft plywood, also available at craft stores. A GI Joe toy can provide you with the wheels.

By keeping notes, every piece of the model is noted on as to size etc.. Cost is minimal, any changes you want or need to make can be done before you start cutting that expensive wood.

Shelly is slightly taller than me. I asked her to lie down and stretch out, and measured head to foot. Came out to 74 inches in her case, so that's the length of our bed. After two trips, 6 nights total so far, its comfortable.

We don't plan on selling the teardrop, it's built for us! Probably you'll want a slightly longer bed.

Every inch counts in a tear, and the rest of the floor space went to a utility/storage compartment in front and the galley in the rear.

Thank you, that’s around what I thought. Yes I’ll have to figure out a way to bump it out a bit. I have a 9 foot trailer so should be able to find the room!

This is my first rough sketch. I have a 5x9 trailer, I drew the deck, added the bed, there’s 7 feet in there, then my kitchen including a vintage three burner chrome Coleman stove, and my biggest cooler. Looks like it will work. Thoughts?

Have to work out that curve on the back over the cooler though…or slide the kitchen forward a few inches…

I need help in these situations conceptualizing the plans.

My normal go to is a mockup on the garage floor done with sheets
of foam or cardboard boxes. When first sketching the TD I now
have we tried a twin bed then our king with dividers. It helped us
to decide on 4 or 5 wide easier then.

Your sketch skills are 10X above mine.

You might widen the doors since you get in a teardrop by sitting in the doorway and then swinging your legs in. I like a doorway that is halfway up the mattress. It helps keeps the bedding in place but you still sit on the mattress, not the doorway.



Make sure you design in the hatch thickness so it doesn't impede on the countertop and stove.

When I designed mine I mocked it up with scrap wood and laid down in it several times and decided it was fine. After finishing it and installing the matress, I tested it again, and all was good. It wasn't until our first camping trip, when I actually slept in it that I realised that I should gave made it a little longer. I sleep on my stomach, and every time I tested it, I was on my back. Sleeping on my stomach my feet usually hang off the end of the matress or flatten out and require a couple of extra inches. Now I wish I had allowed a couple of extra inches at the foot of the matress.

I'll probably be buying a foam mattress and cutting it down to size anyway. I have a new sketch up plan, not as interesting a shape in the back but there's room to modify later. This gave me a much better handle on space then my original sketch. My bed length is down to 6'7".The gap around is 1.75" to accommodate the 1.5 2x2 and two sheets of 1/8 ply with a three inch overhang to hid the trailer frame and I took Tony's suggestion to move the bottom of the door up. Might need to move up a bit more to accommodate the floor...
