Anyone have a light weight tounge jack design?

Postby Buster1903 » Sun Jul 11, 2021 6:22 am

I'm in the prosses of building a ultra light TTT and the tounge jack is a prime location for weight savings. Actually the whole leveling/stabilizing system is. the commercially available legs and jacks are all steel, heavy, and far stronger then I need.
With my old TTT I've used thin steel jack stands and a HF swing tounge jack. It all worked But, I'm looking for a better, easier and lighter solution.
Any Ideas??

For a little work, get a speed rail flange - https://www.buyrailings.com/product/wal ... lange/1644 - an a piece of aluminum tube and a wrench. Put a foot on the tube - welded plate or another flange - and maybe change out the set screw for a hex head bolt or get a t- handled allen wrench and an extra. You'll have to lift but shouldn't be hard if truly light weight.

The jack is a 750# Bulldog. The geared shaft retracts up flush to the frame & the wheel drops out, leaving nothing to hit on uneven ground. With the rear corners of the trailer blocked, the jack will lift the trailer tires off the ground.

The jack weighs 7# w/o wheel. Found at Tractor Supply store.

Thanks, both great suggestions!
You hit either end of my ideas. 1) the lightest thing that will hold the tong up with adjustable height and 2) just find the lightest purpose built tongue jack available.
I think it will come down to how I feel when it comes time to make a choice. At the moment I'm a little overwhelmed by how much I'm fabricating from scratch, and I have a hard deadline of Sept. 15th. will let you all know how it turns out.

No jack for me. I use an old jack stand with a ball attached. Just move things by lifting the tongue by hand.Image

Looks like it will work as a theft deterrent too if you lock the coupler closed on the jackstand.

LOL, I have the exact same jack stands, these are the thin steel stands I have been using for my old trailer.
I like the ball idea. I will probably start with something simple like this, I can always modify it later if needed.
Thanks Friz
