I built a rack to hold the 4 x 8 and 5 x 5 sheet material left over from our teardrop build
or, given the way lumber prices have gone, "a portfolio to hold our investments!"
The four lower shelves are 4 x 8, but I extended the upper one back a foot to take 5 foot Baltic birch. Also leaves us some vertical storage for cut-offs in the back.
I used one of my favorite joinery techniques--cutting notches with a circular saw and chisel. No screws supporting the weight. (Although there are some to keep the pieces from falling apart.)
It's built out of all scrap lumber, including some from our cabin build. I designed it to use 2x4's and 2x6's, but found I didn't have enough straight ones for all the legs, and substituted a 6x6 and 12x6 that had been taking up space in the back room for 15 years
(thought about trying to rip them into 2x material, but that would have been tough given the saws we have, and their weight.) I also used the reject 2x6's from four or five projects: twisty! A close look reveals all of the bad ones came from the center of the tree
Our "cabin" is really a framed house with round milled 2x8 on the inside and out. Plenty of cut-offs left over that I've been saving. Some were ripped in half, and I cut those to take the place of 2x4's for the cross pieces.
So this rack will give us back some space in our workshop in two ways!
I also re-positioned our electric heater. It was in the corner right above the only 240 vac outlet in the shop--necessary for the 6 foot cord to reach, but we bought a 25 foot RV 50 amp extension cord. I used scrap 2x to make clips to hold it to the ceiling
This is all in the space the teardrop occupied for 3 years. If we ever build another we'll have to take out the rack.
While I was downstairs doing this, Shelly was upstairs nursing an ankle she sprained last week. We were planning on putting up a wall (a 2 person job, we reckon) to make a room in the back for the 3D resin printer. Since she isn't using steps for awhile, that's postponed, and she's testing out the printer in a spare bedroom. (Pictures coming soon...)
