10ga is heavy duty for that application. 12ga would be fine, but when it comes to electrical installation, better to be larger than needed than too small. My 110VAC main is 20A breaker, so I have 10ga coming in, but circuits have 15A breakers, so 12ga is all that's needed.
Having said that, 12ga on the main and 14ga on circuits is probably good too. Rarely would see max loads if ever and the the wire has enough margin to handle max current in case of shorts.
In any case, whenever in doubt or close to margins, go up a size..
