Repairing structure element

Postby Wrecit » Tue Feb 22, 2022 1:58 pm

Yea I know, damn this guy is posting alot lol. Well when the conversion is a 36 year old trailer there are alot of issues.

The rear most deck support/bumper is a mangled mess from years of God knows what. It is actually not currently structural but with my new design it will need to be. My question is current measurement is 3 1/4 inch. I am thinking go with either 3x3 box tube or 3x3 C chanel. The square tube will definitely be stronger but the C will be a little weight savings.

What are your thoughts. Also wall thickness on sides is 3/4 inch studs. Would you use square tube or c chanel for window openings.
You hide your conversion and call it stealth. I put mine out in the open and give it a beer.

Try posting some photos. Otherwise, folks aren't going to understand the problem.

Ok if a picture is worth 1000 words then this should be worth a 4 page essay lol. Looks like I can't direct upload pix and am to lazy right now to get a pic site account open.

I'd probably weld in a piece of 2" x 3" .063 steel tubing. I'd be curious to see what the rest of the frame looks like since that piece looks awful thin.

I will be honest for an old school steel trailer I am a bit disappointed by the floor joist thickness. They are in great condition for their age but you can flex them a little if you grab the center. The trailer was a landscapers sometime in the past so assuming there were many high curbs in that rears past

Wrecit, Howdy;

One thing that was kind of a 'Standard' thing when I worked in aviation structural maint.
was to build back as strong or stronger if possible. Have a talk with a local metal fabricator
probably get the best advise there.

Normal attachment methods may be a challenge without seeing farther back, start digging before you go buying.

A square tube is stronger but a C channel will not rust out as fast.
