If the trailer is 5' wide,outside to outside,then how long should the axle be? So far my options are 69" and 73",one seems too short and the other too long???Help

Something to also consider is the backspacing (or lack thereof) of the wheels that will go on the axle. This will effectively bring the wheel and tire closer towards the trailer. I would be looking at axle and wheel packages and measuring interior wheel-to-wheel dimensions, or if you already have the wheels, subtract the backspacing from the dimension of the axle.

If you are using a Dexter, Flexride or even a leaf spring axle with zero offset wheels and normal tires, 73" or 74" hub face to hub face (wheel track) would be good.

Now we've been needing some diagrams to show what to do about axle width for some time, so I've drawn them. But now it's late (here) and I'm off to bed, so you just get the diagrams and I'm sure madjack will add the explanations.

Actually, the term "Backspace" when you are talking to a tire guy or axle supplier is measured from the rim of the wheel not the bulge of the tire. You do have to measure as indicated in the drawings to figure clearance from the trailer, but if you use that measurement and order a wheel with that "backspace" you will get the wrong wheel. Just a thought to keep in mind when talking to a wheel supplier.

call this guy got mine shipped to the house for 169 dollars total.thats the complete axle, springs ,ubolt kit,bolts ,hanger kit ,everything u need.all i did was tell him how wide my frame was and what size tires/backspacing i was using and he figured it out and it was right onhttp://abctrailerparts.com/

All my axles come abc trailer parts also. I get them shipped here in Phoenix cheaper then going to the local supplier of Dexter axles here in Phoenix. And thats including shipping. And nice guys to talk to and helpful.

Andrew, those diagrams are great. I'm going to use them when I talk to my welder. I am having my tires mounted today and will pick them up, measure them after work tomorrow and then I'll put in the call for my axle. Progress is being made and I'm getting braver.

100% right there, Leon. I was trying to keep things simple(r).

I've modified the diagrams above to use the term 'tire backspace'.

OK, after all the cool pics, and calling southwest wheel,
im now even MORE confused,

S.W. wheel told me that a 60inch frame would take, (60+13=73)
a 73inch, hub to hub axle, for a "0" offset wheel,
and leave me 2inches on both sides of my frame, for sheeting,
clearance ect,

he told me it would be the same for torsion OR spring,
and the torsion arms would NOT hit my sheeting,
and id weld my own axle perches,(no biggie)

does this sound correct???
i want to order, but am leary, i dont have money to waste,

John, that sounds correct to me...we just figured on one for KA with a 57.5 frame and an overhang coming out to a body size of 60" and it came in atta 71" minimum...your frame is 1.5 wider and they gave ya another 2"s.......
