Do I need a fuse box or in-line fuse?

Postby jasonj » Thu May 30, 2024 7:15 pm

Hello

I have a good idea what I will do for my trailer build: a small weekend travel trailer, about 6' x 8'. I am not going to run 110V wires or outlets. I got a Goal Zero Yeti 400 and solar panel at a yard sale that will be the basis and majority of my electrical system for now. The battery has a 12V DC(?) output and two 120V AC outlets for any small appliances i want to run, so the inverter is taken care of.
I am pulling with a car and have a flat 4 connector for trailer lights, so no charging while driving.
I have attached a diagram at the bottom.
Should I install an inline fuse in the 12V wiring? Or a fuse box? I don't want to disregard safety just out of shear ignorance.
Thank You All

The 12 volt line needs to be fused. 14 AWG copper stranded wire (not copper coated aluminum) will work for all of your 12 volt needs. A 10 amp fuse will be fine and you may consider a breaker instead.

That's assuming the 12 volt plug in your Goal Zero is 15 amps or better.

Honestly, that setup will work well. Ideally, you could charge via solar while driving. That being said, you can run a cable from the 12v output port to a fuse block, and connect all your accessories to that.

Another thing to keep in mind.... Most of the power stations have their 12v output limited to 10-15A
