TORSION AXLE ALLIGNMENT

Postby KCG » Tue Jun 11, 2024 9:49 pm

I'm having a warranty fail with a well known torsion axle brand. Bought a #9 and installed it on a 5x10 teardrop (total weight approx 1500 lbs). Drove 8000 miles (6 months) and had totally bald tires. Wear pattern indicated toe-out condition. Measuring showed 1/2 inch total toe-out (for 14 inch tires, equiv to 1 degree.) These were interstate miles and had no incidents that would cause damage. My assumption was that the axle was shipped out-of-line. The manufacterer promptly and without complaint shipped me a new replacement. I was very greatful until I installed it and saw visible toe-in on the right side. I took it to a tire shop, replaced the destroyed tires and had them measure the allignment, which showed 0.25 inch total toe-in. I can find no spec for any vehicle that permits this much. The tire guy said this was excessive. After some back-and-forth communication with customer service the manufacterer said they thought there was no problem. and If I had any trouble with performance to contact them.
I wasn't happy paying $400.00 for a new set of tires ruined by an axle shipped bad. I won't be happy paying to replace short lived tires ruined by a replacement axle shipped bad whether or not they ship me a fresh one when I complain about "performance".
I would like to know if other users feel they may be experiencing abnormal tire wear due to torsion axles that may have been shipped out of alingnment. I know I received one and suspect I got 2 in a row.
An axle's main job is to ensure the tires both point in the same direction.

I must update my previous post. The manufacturer said they will be shipping me a (second) replacement axle. I can't complain about the customer service (though I already have. I thought they'd stonewalled me)

Try finding a trailer alignment shop or a semi truck type shop that works on trailers. May be able to lead you in the right direction.
Does this bolt on. Might possibly be able to loosen up the bolts and shift it.

Re-allignment requires cold bending the axle tube. A machine shop could do it, but the cost would approach that of a new axle.

I'll close this up. The manufacturer replaced the second axle without quibbleing, and it is in good allignment. I applaud their customer service, but question their quality control. If you are having tire wear issues with a new torsion axle, doen't assume the axle is o.k.. Check it out.
