Thank you Travel Junkie!

You may notice we get a lot of spam on this site, folks looking to advertise unrelated products for free. One of their tactics seems to be to put up innoculous looking posts (often appearing to be generated by AI bots) and then editing them later to add the ad, presumably after everyone has moved on hoping they won't notice and report the post, which means they are stealing free advertising space from this site and also scamming their clients. My apologies for being suspicious.

Made a camel stew with some leftover backstrap.
Chunks of camel meat, red chilis, green capsicums, brown onions, tomatoes.
Came out nice. Never photographs well, but nice to eat.

I returned from a long weekend volunteering with Courage Incorporated in the way back sticks of Marquette County in the UP (Michigan's Upper Peninsula).

https://www.courageincorporated.org/

This was my most rewarding volunteer gig in my life and I hope to continue volunteering with them going forward.

Pictured is Marine Vet Andrew getting ready to prepare a nice mess of pike. Tell a Vet thank you today!

After more than 15 days of high temperature’s in the 80’s the air conditioner in my Trailblazer gave out.
It would run then quit. I bought a HVAC control module from Autozone and it was the correct one for my vehicle.
While removing the old one I noticed the two wires going to the fan which I replaced in 2017 were about 6” longer than the new one.
After struggling with the clip I got out my multi-tool and cut the sucker.
I had to cut about 6” of wire off the old one to make it fit.
Luckily I had some of the butt connectors left over from my teardrop builds that you seal with a heat gun.
Now the fan blows great.

It's hot and my trailer has been sitting in the broiling sun. 100° today.
So I thought I'd play with the portable swamp cooler. (Used it when our roof was done)
Experimenting with windows all open and door cracked, roof vent open vs. closed.
Getting ready for Bonneville and won't have any power. One guy had these misters for the crew. Had a kobalt which fit on a bucket and he had a Artic Air. Both worked great BTW.
The AA has a built-in 6hr battery and water tank. That was perfect for my application.
Probably run it at night after we get booted off the salt. I wouldn't run the mister much in the trailer but on those stale air nights with no wind I'd probably turn it on for a few.
Oh it's gonna be hot.

Those little swampies are annoying. The concept is great, the execution frustrating.
In an ideal world, the would be perfectly flat on the intake side, allowing them to be mounted directly over one of my wall vents.
Then, they could draw the hot dry air from outside, cool it, blow it through the cabin and out the other vents. One pass through with cooled air, minimising humidity build up.

I'd love one that could be a window mount. They just don't make em small enough.
Maybe one day I'll make one when this craps out. For now this will do.

It will shortly be officially spring in the land Downunder. It's been a pretty dry winter in the state of South Australia.
My farming mates have planted, but some are resigned to no harvest this year. Too little rain so far, and soon it will be too late.
The ones who don't reap this year may actually be better off. Just turn the sheep into the paddocks, and watch them turn hundreds of thousands of dollars of seed, fuel, and fertiliser into meat, wool and breeding stock. There will be a time when those who are forced to shoot their sheep are looking to restock when the rains come back.
Ewes will be worth a quid then.
It's looking a bit grim for now.
Still, some years back I built a shade house.
It's purpose is to try to grow summer vegetables in a sheltered situation.
It's a simple affair - four 7 metre hoops of 3 inch HDPE pressure pipe slipped over stakes hammered into the ground.
The 4 hoops are tied together with 19mm x 35mm RHS. The whole lot is covered in white 50% shade cloth.
It gives me an area about 6 metres by 4 metres where anything planted is lightly shaded from the summer sun.
Today I did my third planting.
Seedlings of cucumber, capsicum, spinach and yellow butter beans.
Previously, I planted three varieties of tomatoes, shallots and garlic.
I'm hope I at least get a salad out of it.

I took apart a Monkey Wards workbench that hasn't been disassembled in 60+ years

173947 173948

It was my Dad's, and the one I used as a teenager. Nice and sturdy, it'll make a great addition to my woodshop. The work surface could be replaced, but as is, it will be fine for holding a few sanders.

I will probably replace the square nuts with more modern ones, and the bolts are a bit rusty. Other than that, it's in great shape!

I took pictures of each step of the disassembly. All I should have to do is follow them in reverse. Just like a 1957 Lotus Seven!

Two days ago, I visited the bloke who has been stitching me back together, for a post surgery review.
He happens to be the boss cocky of surgery at the Queen Elisabeth Hospital, where he teaches surgery as well as performs it.
There's an artwork hanging in his office.
It's a piece he commissioned, and it's just stunning in the flesh. There's a lot going on.
The amphitheatre on the left side, reminiscent of the old school teaching methods where students would stand in the galleries looking down on the surgeon as he demonstrated a technique.
Overlaid with historical photos from the Queen Elisabeth Hospital, and a colourised MRI of a skull.
On the right, a modern surgeon in mask in the background, stylised anatomical depiction of a human head in the foreground.
More photos overlaid, didn't forget to include the cleaning staff.
One of the coolest things: the pattern of the blood vessels on your heart are as unique as a fingerprint. So when the artist had a heart attack, what better way to sign the art than an angiogram picture of his own heart.
Over the top of it all - a bit of modern graffiti, "Cut Me". In blood red, of course.
The vision was brilliant, the execution incredible.
I can't say it made it worth needing the surgeries, just to see it, but it certainly made the visits a little more pleasant.

Annual Day of Labor

Postby Tom&Shelly » Mon Sep 02, 2024 11:51 am

Today I set up a five finger discount in front of my Mom's house

173978

Mostly scrap wood and junk that accumulated in the basement over the past 60 years. Whatever doesn't disappear by Wednesday gets taken away by the local trash authorities.

Someone already came by and took two wooden fruit crates. Originally shipped from somewhere in South America that no longer likes the United States. (Probably didn't in 1960 either.) I also noticed a slightly broken cooler had disappeared.

Actually, this is about half of it. I looked at the forecast this morning and it was bright and sunny through Wednesday. About two hours later a rain storm passed through, so I held off taking down the cardboard boxes of junk and mattresses. Last week we gave a lot of stuff to a mission run thrift store, until the workers started to give us dirty looks. We took the good stuff first and progressed down until...well, you can see in the picture.

Tom

Update: Several hours later. We were faster putting stuff out than the scroungers were taking it in. Still haven't put out the mattresses, or the recycling.

173980

It's a good thing we have long yards in our neighborhood!

Shelly put the riding lawm mower (not run in 25 years) on some forum giving it away free, and got 7 or 8 emails in a few minutes. It went to a good home, and they also took a few scraps of wood.

Hope everyone had a happy Labor Day! We'll grill tonight, now that the hard work is done for the weekend.
