camping on private land

Postby Ron Dickey » Wed Sep 18, 2024 11:24 am

I just leaned there is a app called Hipcamp.
https://www.hipcamp.com/en-US
You enter in where you live or want to camp and they tell you if there are any private camp grounds there.
Some are just tent sites some have hookups etc.
if anyone has more input into this let us know
most are for like 4 or more sites. They do offer a Group site too.
There are areas where there is little to know camping, KOA's or state or federal parks that this might make it possible.

I have not done a lot of research into them but sounds good.

It seemed like a great idea when I first noticed the site. I tried to submit a payment to become a host and thought I would use the service occasionally for my own trips. That was about three years ago. A representative called me after reading my profile and noticed that I had a teardrop camper. They asked a variety of questions and then informed me I wasn't welcome because I didn't have a bathroom in my teardrop.

I hope they have come to their senses but I get the feeling they only want "self contained" RVs. YMMV.

Doesn't make sense since they offer tent sites.

Try again...?
Maybe they misunderstood what you wanted. Maybe they thought you wanted to rent your Teardrop "RV" as a host.

Last spring's teardrop crawl included a campground that was offered by Hipcamp and some of our group liked it so much that several of them reserved spots for next spring.

Good to hear Sharon. Sounds like my experience was unusual.

I love hipcamp. I have used it many times. I would recommend reading the reviews and checking the pictures before booking. They're all over the place when it comes to size and amenities. Insider tip, some "tent" sites can accommodate a teardrop. Just ask and you will be surprised how many say yes.

Hipcamp has been great for me. Being in the middle of the country without BLM or National Parks within convenient distances, I can find spots that provide solitude. Plus some have unique features/access/amenities that add to the experience.

I'm so happy this topic was addressed. My experience, probably in the late twenty-teens, is obviously not usual. I will look again at the site.

I do remember the reason that I was called after I submitted a host application and fee was because the caller said my debit card was refused. My credit union debit card doesn't allow out of country charges (she said she was in Canada). That led to questions about my camper.

I doubt if my property is attractive to campers. It'd be more of a stop off for a night for someone entering the UP for an extended trip. So I may just seek out sites to try.

iOverlander is the app all the van lifers use. It has a mix of public/private campgrounds and dispersed camping. We haven't used it much, we prefer RV Parky so we can call ahead and make a reservation while on the road.
