Teardrop Camper Canopies

Postby cdnred » Tue Jan 21, 2025 2:30 pm

I've seen several teardrop campers that use canopies to cover their campers with. Possibly for extra rain protection, sun shade to reduce interior heat or..? I have a canopy to cover my kitchen area at the back but have given some thought to getting a canopy for the extra rain protection it would offer. Clearance needed to cover my vent when closed would need to be 70 inch minimum. One issue that comes up is being able to stand up to wind resistance which could become a major issue. They could end up flying like a kite should a strong wind come up even though they're staked down to the ground..

Have others given thought to using a canopy for similar reasons..? If so, any recommendations on what would be best to consider..?

We used our ez-up to cover our teardrop during the heat. Works well.
Now we use the same canopy for our cargo trailer. Usually putting it behind the rear doors or on the sun facing side, keeps inside temps down.
I always have it strapped down to the frame incase (4 straps) but if I have enough of a warning winds are coming, it gets folded up.
Never understood why some choose to put the cover on after the frame has been unfolded. We've always left ours attached.
10yrs old and still good.

That's good to know about strapping to the frame. Much more secure then relying on it strapped down just to the ground..

We generally rely on our awning but we do have and occasionally use a canopy. Really just for extra shade outside or cover from light rain.

We have used the canopy in heavy wind - Camping on Padre Island - when you place your guy-lines use a 10" or 12" spike (think giant nail) instead of those wimpy pegs they come with. Also, place a strong synthetic rubber bungy in line with the guy-wire. This will provide some flex in the line, reduce stress and prevent something from breaking. When in sand fill a 100% cotton tube sock with sand, tie the guy-line to it, bury it in the sand and wet the sand at that spot well. Nothing will pull that up. Since cotton is organic and compostable you can just cut your line below the surface and leave it in the ground. Dry sand is easy to dig in to using a simple tool like a Frisbee or even by hand.

I too love ripstop nylon rain flies attached with Keder rails. Makes for a light weight, adaptable windscreen and/or roof for those rainy or windy days.
