500-600 lbs

I am wanting to build my 3rd Teardrop trailer. The first one was a 5x8 and weighed ~1100 lbs. The next one was my adaptation of the Rhondack plans and weighed about 1600lbs.

For this one, I want to tow with my 1974 VW Thing to go camping at local lakes. We have hills but that's about it. Certainly no large ones for the most part. It has the disc brakes upgrade. The CLC Teardrop says it weighs between 500-600lbs and this is about where I need to be. I was hoping I could figure out a way to do that without using that kit but if not, that is what I will do. I have no problem with the clc teardrop but was wanting a more tradition look, if possible.

I appreciate those using foam but just not my thing. So my question is, is there anyone that has built a wooden teardrop that came in at this weight? I did a search but I guess I couldn't quite figure out what phrase to use for my search or the answer is no. A galley is a must. 4x8 is fine since it will be just me. My wife says she is claustrophobic. lol

The CLC is made from 3mm marine ply and gets it rigidity from the curved shape and stitch and glue technique. If foam isn't an option, it will be hard to hit your weight target with flat surfaces and thin plywood without a frame.

Maybe laminate foam board to the thin plywood? That should stiffen things up.

Can you handle working in metric? It's really very simple, once you stop thinking in terms of metres and centimetres and just use millimetres.

build a reproduction of the late 40's Modernistic teardrops. Ours (original Modernistic) weighed around 650 lb when I took it to a transfer station scale. It has a steel frame, all aluminum body, and the only wood in it is the plywood floor, hatch frame, and plywood sandwiched in the single door. Aircraft type rivet construction. Classic style and light weight.
