Pre-Season Maintenance Check List

Postby Capebuild » Wed Apr 02, 2025 2:54 am

Hello All.
I'll be pulling my trailer out from its winter storage shed this weekend in preparation for our first trip of the season. I'm asking if people could share their "maintenance check list" of things you inspect and check prior to taking your rig out on the road. Checking/adjusting the brakes is one thing I know I should check.
Thanks very much.

General visual inspection of outside, note anything that looks unusual for a deeper look.
Second pass visual inspection - check tires, coupler, propane mount and hoses, any exposed wiring, etc
Check doors(hatch), struts, hinges and latches. Lube anything that needs it, silicon on rubber seals, etc.
Check function of windows, vent
Check exterior lights and brake function
Jack up one side, check for play in wheel, visual brake inspection through backing plate, and with my ez lube hubs add fresh grease. Lower and check lug torque, repeat on other side.
Check tool/emergency kit. Restock anything you might need.
Inside, check spaces for pest intrusion, check screens, lighting, wipe everything down. I pull out all cooking/eating supplies and wash. Restock and go!

I check the lug nut torque and give the Dexter E-Z lube Zerk fittings a few squirts of grease.

When checking the tires don't just check for cracking or tread depth, check the date code and make sure they are still less than 5 years old regardless of how "good" they look!

Double check that all charging systems are functioning as they should.

Sounds crazy but make sure vents open and operate properly. I was preparing for a trip and tried to open the top vent and it was stuck! Had to pull from the top, would have been a booger if I waited until I arrived and had no step ladder handy. It was cranked down hard and tree sap and what not sealed it up.

Enjoy the year!

I had it easy this year. I needed new tires so I had them check and re-grease the bearings at the same time.

I check the air in the tires every time before I go camping because that diminishes just sitting in the garage.

Thanks all for the tips and your thoughts. Just pulled my trailer out from the storage shed today. All looks good. Installed the battery from its winter storage. Ready for travel!! Everybody, enjoy the spring camping season. We're off for a journey down south.
