Bad Bug Alert

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby Kevin A » Sat Aug 12, 2006 2:07 am

Does anyone have any detailed info on this bug? Any links for the fix etc.... I like to take these threats seriously when necessary, but I have also seen folks duped by e-mails claiming to identify a virus or bug that turned out ot be a hoax.

I didn't see in the article where it says the exploit is out in the wild. But that doesn't make this matter any less important. You do want to "patch the holes before the boat sinks". On top of this, PC users (Windows, Mac, and Linux) can be more proactive by making sure their antivirus software is up to date, and stays up to date. Most exploits will come in the form of a worm. And just because there have really been no worms created for a Mac does not mean there will be none in the future. As soon as the worm is identified, the AV manufacturers will have updates posted. A firewall (hardware and/or software) is also highly recommended, escpecially if you have broadband, where the connection is always on.

Bill, like I said, that is one of dozens of news reports on this bug that I have seen...goto www.google.com/news they have about 150 different articles on this...the code has been posted on the web for this exploit so that means it is out in the wild...I have said it before and will say it again...get the fix, patch your OS...you owe it to yourself and to the PC community in general...I rarely post such stuff as this but when both MS and DHS go off on it at the same time I figure it must be a pretty bad one......

The main point I'm trying to make is that you should not rely only on MS patches to protect your PC. You should load the MS patches, but also install and keep up to date an antivirus program, get a firewall (hardware and/or software), turn off HTML in your email, and don't open any emails from people you don't know (especially if it has an attachment).

...totally in agreement...I keep all of my anti virus/spyware programs upto date and scan regularly also use a software firewall...I don't usually do the MS patches until a couple of the techy newsletters I get say they are glitch free themselves(no auto updates) but did this one after reading onit cause of the severity of it...

Look at the bottom of the above link to see all the other uPdates that are being installed as well.

Are your uPdates really installed?
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... stall.mspx

Step by step to see if you have the uPdate.
Go to uPdate manager In Internet Explorer.
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupda ... x?ln=en-us
On left side under options click "Review your Update history"
Print it out and make sure you have the correct KBXXXXXX number for the MS software version you have.
