Brand-new 8000 BTU AC half-price

Postby Ira » Sun Aug 13, 2006 10:25 am

It's been a rough two weeks, because my home AC unit took a crap. We have a replacement contract with Service America, and they won't "condemn" the unit and replace it because they say corrosion of the coils isn't covered.

And they won't cover replacement of the coils.

I am going to be facing a legal battle with them in the weeks ahead, but in the meantime, it will cost me a small fortune to replace the coils, and a bigger fortune to replace the entire unit, which I can't afford now.

And no, I'm not using this as another excuse why The Crab isn't finished yet, only to bring us to the title of this thread:

So I ran to HD yesterday and bought an 8000 window shaker for $169 so we wouldn't bake--and man, we WERE baking. If I wind up buying a new main AC, I'll sell it to anyone in South Florida with a really big TD for 80 bucks.

This whole experience is more humiliating than finding out Animusic isn't real.

Hi Ira how old is that unit and have you had it cleaned ,they use acid to clean the coils if it was rinsed of good the acid will eat the fins off of the coils.
Some days all you can do is smile and wait for some kind soul to come along and pull your ass out the bind you've gotten yourself into.

The unit's at least 25 years old, as old as the house. The guy told me the coils were corroded.

He said, "Look--they're corroded." I looked, but couldn't see ANYTHING behind the spinning fan.

I'm gonna get another guy to take a look at it, a friend of mine in the business. What's aggravating is the main reason I HAD this contract with Service America was just for the AC. I knew its time was coming, and I wanted to be ready.

I'm really pissed.

Okay, depending on how you parse this unpunctuated string of words, I believe Ira just offered an 8000 BTU AC with a really big TD included for $80! THAT sounds like a deal!

I REFUSE TO ACCEPT PUNCTUATION CRITICISM!

I might employ a dangling participle here and there, but my punctuation is usually beyond reproach. But I'm curious as to another way of constructing that sentence without adding a whole bunch of words and totally losing my authorial integrity.

And I can't believe I actually used the word "authorial" on a web side dedicated to luan and Gorilla Glue.

I do hereby offer my most sincere apology (or at least as sincere as I can possibly be to someone who dangled his participle and used the word authorial in the same posting).

After my callous and careless remark, I was reminded that the Rules of Engagement specifically do not allow one to attack/annoy/chide/aggravate/poke fun of/irritate/harass a man anywhere south of the Suwanee River in August who is suffering from malfunctioning air conditioning. It just ain't kosher, y'all.

Humbly,

Ira,
Those appliance warranty companys are a big scam. Do a websearch and you will find a lot of consumer complaints.
By the way, I would guess that a 25 yearold A.C. in florida is ready for a replacement.
Our elec. company will give you a rebate if you get a 12 seer or better unit.
Good luck

Apology graciously and warmly accepted, Keith.

And Ramp, what's a 12 seer? Energy Efficient Rating?

Yup SEER is the energy efficiency. The higher the number the better. I upgraded to a 12SEER when I built this house. My mom redid their a/c and upgraded to a 14SEER. I think they also got some breaks from FPL when they did it.

Ira,
The average life span for a residential A/C is 15-20 years, so 25-ish aint bad. I am sorry to hear that the warranty folks are screwing you. But if you replace your A/C system now the new minimum SEER rating is 13 SEER it used to be 10 SEER. So at least you should see lower electric bills after the change. You might end up saving money in the long run, like 10-15 years.
By the way rampage is right many electric companies give rebates for people that replace old units or go with higher SEER units on new construction. good luck.

This summer when not camping, we're been using the teardrop air conditioner in the bedroom window at night. Since I'm usually the only one in the house during the week, it seemed kinda wasteful to run the upstairs central unit at night for just one person in one room.

I paid $169 for 8000 BTUs, and since my living room windows are the ONLY windows that aren't crank-out, this is the only place I could install a window shaker anyway.

My wife has had problems sleeping with its noise, but for me, no problem at all. I'll take the noise, as long as it's not 101 degrees in there.
