"Cali?"

As a former Californian (or perhaps I should say, "Kal-ee-FOR-nee-yun"), I was just wondering - when did it become "Cali?"

There was a rap song a while back; "I'm going back to cali, to cali to cali......" it was by LL Cool J

"Going Back To Cali"

I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali.. hmm, I don't think so
I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali.. I don't think so

Going back to Cali, stylin, profilin
Growlin, and smilin, while in the sun
The top is down, on the black Corvette
And it's fly, cause it's sittin on Dayton's
Laurents steering wheel, plushed out, gold-leaf phantom top
and three girls waiting
VRRRROOM engine's blowin, the chrome, is shining
Passing all the cars on the way
Movement of the wind, back wheels spin
Pop in a cassette and push play

I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali - yea y'all, I don't think so
I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali..

I'm going back to Cali, shakin 'em, bakin 'em
Takin 'em to spots they never before hung
?? the place, on Sunset it's a trip
Where the A.C.'s cold, and the girls still strip
The record skip, but this girl kept dancin
Prancin, grindin, grinnin, romancin
I asked her to the barn, so we could hit the hay
I wanna do this, Brutus, but I don't wanna pay

I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali - no man I don't think so
I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali..
..

I'm going back to Cali, rising, surprising
Advising realizing, she's sizing me up
Her bikini - small; heels - tall
She said, she liked, the ocean
She showed me a beach, gave me a peach
and pulled out the suntan lotion
Now I thought that was fast, but this girl was faster
She's lookin for a real good time
I said, "Close your eyes, I got a surprise,"
and I ran away with the bottle of wine

I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali.. I don't think so
I'm going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I'm going back to Cali.. I don't think so

And it looks like the forum is getting wonky again - shows my response to Ken as a minute earlier than his response to my question. Go figger...

Guess I'm just a sucker for the classics.

When the wintry winds are blowing,
And the snow is starting in to fall,
Then my eyes turn westward,
Knowing that's the place
I love the best of all.
California, I've been blue,
Since I've been away from you,
I can't wait 'til I get going,
Even now I'm starting in to call:

California here I come,
Right back where I started from,
Where bowers of flowers bloom in the sun,
Each morning at dawning
Birdies sing an' ev'rything:
A sun-kiss'd miss said, "don't be late,"
That's why I can hardly wait,
Open up that Golden Gate,
California here I come!

Written by Bud De Sylva and Joseph Meyer, performed by Al Jolson

Maybe it has something to do with you guys electing Reagan and Scharzenegger?

Now THAT's totally retarded!

And all of the excuses in the world won't change that fact.
Here we go again!

Oh I dunno, Ira,

Florida elected Jeb Bush for their governor, does that make your state retarded too? ;) Maybe you all can find a guy named Chad for your next governor...

Don't need excuses for Reagan - he took the state out of the red and put it into the black. Woulda done the same thing for the country were it not for Congress spending $1.85 for every dollar in revenue. Kinda like they're doing to Bush now - revenue has increased due to the Bush tax cuts, but spending has way surpassed it...

It is true, Congress appropriates the funds. However, both administrations, Reagan and Dubya, pushed hard for massive miltary expenditures that drove deficits to record levels.

In Reagan's case those expeditures were the final straw leading to the colapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. The Soviets with their inefficient economy just couldn't keep up. It probably would have happened anyway. But, Reagan's massive military buildup hastened the process.

Dubya's increase in military expeditures are being spent in Iraq. The dreaded WMD's did not exist dispite all that scary talk of "mushroom clouds" and "death on a massive scale". Three years later, we're being told to "stay the course". The justification now is peace and democracy for the Iraqi people. If the recent outbreak of sectarian violence is any indication, Iraq could very well break out into a bloody religious civil war the moment we pull out. All this begs the question, what are we getting for our money?

Say what you will about Clinton (I voted against him twice). He balanced the Federal budget and presided over longest economic expansion the U.S. has ever known.

The hijack of this thread has turned it into one of the T&TTT taboo topics of discussion.

I am from Cali too, although I never called it that. I agree about the "La La Land" or "Land of Fruits and Nuts". I can't be too hard on CA though since almost all my family is still there, from San Diego to San Francisco. Born and raised in Fullerton before moving to Phoenix for high school. College in Texas, then moved to Atlanta in '89. The south has become "home" to me. I like visiting California but doubt I'd ever live there again. Too crowded and expensive and to may "la-ti-da" attitudes! Plus my hubby is a GA mountain man and he couldn't handle the "city" LOL He wouldn't even consider living in Phoenix, although he loved Flagstaff and Sedona when we visited out there. :)
