Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Internet explorer 7

Postby tonyj » Wed Sep 13, 2006 12:34 am

I don't know when it surfaced, but Microsoft has a new internet explorer, Version 7 Candidate 1. I just installed it to see if it would fix some problems I have been having. I have not been able to print from IE for several months--some type of script error. I also could not get some graphics to display--it would just display the red "x". For example, Dean's avatar and graphics examples would not display. I have fiddle-farted around with fixes and setting for months, but to no avail.

Well, after installing the new IE, everything works again. The new interface is pretty snazzy. I'm still learning it. The only thing I've noticed is it seems to take a bit longer to open new pages, but I'll monitor that to see if it is the program or just the websites. The new versions has a new Phishing detector, and that could be causing some of the delay.

Anyway, if your operating system will support it, check it out. For fixing my problems, and my very cursory review, I give it a  .

Just found a great feature. They have added a tab function so you can open several web pages at once. So I opened my homepage, web mail page, and this forum page. When I started to close out IE, I selected options and selected to "Open these (tabs) the next time I use Internet Explorer". I closed out and reopened and voila! The three were all there ready to use. I really like that feature!
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just say "no" to mediocreware. Use Firefox or Opera instead of Internet Exploder. They've had the "new" features of IE 7 for years.

I jumped ship to Mozilla(full suite) years ago and never looked back...I use a version of "Smart Browser" which is a modified IE engine for those sites that require IE...it has all the "new" features of IE7 and had them years ago...throw IE in the trash (any version) and go with FireFox(Mozilla's baby) or any of the other options mentioned.....

I think those products are good alternatives for most users out there. Unfortunately, I am tied to Microsoft products at the office and have to be able to use and diagnose the frequent problems its presents. I might change at home and try some of the others listed, but it seems that home use is where I build my proficiency in the products I use at work. Can't go into why I have to use MS at work unless you want to PM me. For what IE offers (and the problems it has), my point was that they have made a pretty good upgrade, maybe years behind the others, but a step in the right direction.

But from the rebuke and chastising from the revelation that I use Internet Explorer (gasp!) when better products are available, I'm not even going to mention that I drive a Ford, eat cholesterol laden mexican food, pay retail, and don't have XM radio!

I use a Firefox add-on called IE Tab - 'View page in IE Tab' becomes one item in the right-click menu, so you can quickly view the same page through IE, but within Firefox - very clever and works well, as well as simply.

Get a plugin for Firefox called IE Box. It installs an icon in the lower right hand corner of firefox. If a page doesn't display right, click on the icon and firefox will use the IE rendering engine to display the page. If you right click on the icon, you can save the page so that it will always use IE rendering.

I use this at work to update my time sheet and to read defect reports from our database. I don't use it at home, as I don't use Windows at home, so I can't use IE.

Just an update . . .

I felt so bad to find out I had been satisfied with an inferior product that I couldn't even look my dog square in the eyes.

So, tonight, I drank the kool-aid and installed Firefox.

It is funny how microsoft copies as their own what others have made popular. The interface is remarkably similar to IE7. Even down to the circular twirly thing when a new page is loading.

One immediate drawback--I received an email from Bill Gates and he said I could now burn in hell before he would send the money promised me in that email I responded to three years ago. I am now a marked man.

What wrath have you all wrought upon me? I'm doomed. I'm not using a MS product! I'm, I'm . . . strangely at peace and satisfied. No computer glitches in the last 20 seconds. So this is the Promised Land!

Thanks, everyone for your recommendations.

Now wait until we lead you away from that dog Micro$oft Office into the land of OpenOffice.org. M$ Office meets the classical description of a boat: A hole in the water (computer) into which you pour money.

And if you are in to graphics, give a gander at The Gimp.

Total price for these: $0.00

Heresy! Temptation! Stay away from me with your false idols!

I thought about the switch a long time ago, but bosses said no. Some people you can't change. I'm considering changing everyone's browsers and telling 'em it's some some type of virus, but a good one. Don't know if they'll buy it. It boils down to picking the battles to fight. I have been thru every spreadsheet program and word processor since Visicalc and Wordstar. The first and only system the office folks have ever used is office. I have no problems making the jump to new programs. But alas, I have a flexible skillset. Eventually the dollar difference may change their minds. But glaciers melt at a slow rate . . .

Tonyj,

You ever had the problem in IE when you tried to print, that it would chop off the RH side of the page? Try printing that same page in Firefox... Voila' the whole page prints! :o

Yeah, I found that. In fact, MS incorporated that into IE7. Imagine that!

I think MS's slogan, instead of "Where do you want to go today?" should be "Where do we want to go today to rip off some good programming ideas that we should have done years ago?"

When Lotus was in version 2.0 and Excel was behind them in features, Lotus had just introduced the ability to retrieve numbers and info from other spreadsheet files. Mind you it was a little clumsy--you had to know the file name and cell reference, and it wasn't an instant update link. Anyway, I tried out a spreadsheet program called QuatroPro that actually had multiple pages in one spreadsheet file. It was a great spreadsheet program, and I converted all my files and used it for close to two years. Excel incorporated the feature, plus all the formatting stuff, clobbered Lotus 123, gained dominance with the office suite, and I had to give up QPro to have files compatible with what everyone else was using. I had to give up my nice little spreadsheet program, and Bill Gates became the richest man in the world.

And when I printed a webpage, it chopped off the right side of the page. It's like buying a car, but it doesn't have right side doors.
