I can't believe my biggest Christmas pet peeve got triggered already.
I went to WalMart last night in a great mood. I had just gotten out of Boaters World for $1.69 and had filled the tank on my truck for 2.139 a gallon. I was feeling good.
Walked in the back entrance at Wal-Mart--the one near the garden department here you can sneak in without somebody welcoming you to the place. I then got stuck in my tracks. There it was. Right in front of me.
Santa Claus.
I looked around. More Christmas decorations and trees. The display was already set up.
Hell--it's September 13th! We have Columbus day, Halloween and Thanksgiving to get through. And they are already selling Christmas stuff.
I don't know about y'all, but Christmas is special to me. Not the commercial part, but the spirit and the reason for the season. And as much as I hate to see anyone's commercial venture get tromped on, capitalizing on Christmas in September is just wrong. We have plenty of time to do the shopping, and we don't need to be reminded to start early. This habit of starting the commercial process for Christmas earlier and earlier each year, and the commercial side of Christmas itself is sucks the pure enjoyment out of the holiday. I wish we could pass a law that said no Christmas sales or advertising or displays until December 1st. Maybe then the holiday could regain some of its dignity.
I plan to go back and at least voice my disappointment to the manager. I know he can't do anything about it, but if enough of us would complain, maybe the retail world would change its habits. I am a dreamer, I know.
Christmas displays in September--it makes me sick. Merry Christmas--and don't forget to stock up on your Easter supplies. Remember, July 4th is closer than you think!
Thanks for letting me vent.
