Going camping for the first time on my own

I almost threadjacked a thread about colorado gathering and decided to repost in a new thread here so I can figure out what to do for the gathering.

Yay seems like I have the weekend off!! so this mean I will go to the last gasp meet in royal gorge in CO friday evening to sunday evening.

now I have to figure out how to camp on the meager budget of mine (the budget are mostly for gas and foods). I wonder if the DO eat out on saturday will be like a party where I could join and eat for free? Don't worry, I'll try to contribute something if somebody there are willing to help season my DO (Can't do it here and dunno anybody with a large enough grill to season it).

What would you suggest that I bring cause this would be the first time planning a camping trip by myself (all my past camping trips was planned by my dad usually). Naturally I'll bring the stuffs listed below but any idea of what cheap Item I should have with me?

I'll try to get a bin for dishes and stuffs

hygenic stuffs (gonna have to leave my shaving blade at home and let my hair grow a little for the weekend)

My digital camera (cause this will be my first time really seeing TearDrop trailer.

Books for the quiet time (currently reading the "Earth's Children" Series)

Dunno what food you think i should bring cause I might take most of my canned foods and stuffs. Wish I have some idea of what might be better instead for the camping.

Defidently bring alot of hearing aid batteries!

Would I need to bring a large container of water? (in case the campground don't have a water connection or something)

Hey there curiouswill,

Good luck on your first outing. When I take my family I find that a 2.5 gallon jug of water is usually enough for cleaning and cooking. Paper towels to help clean things up with. Also while speaking of cooking you will want some heat source for cooking with, either a fire or a camp stove or charcoal. Toilet paper is always good no matter what.

Just a few things that popped into my mind after reading your post. Enjoy you weekend!!

The handiest thing to have is a bag of self-lighting carcoal. You can use it for cooking obviously and it starts a campfire in a jiffy. Can't believe I said jiffy. Anyway, take charcoal.

Food stuffs.......granola bars.....elbow macaroni and a jar of pasta sauce (boil elbows, add sauce) ..... packets of Quaker Oatmeal (boil water add packet) ..... kabassi in the sealed plastic packaging (boil/heat on a stick make sandwich)...... condiments....... fruit ...... peanuts in the shell..... coffee/tea/etc

Hobo dinner......pre-prepared (is that a word?) ...... lay out a 12" by 18" piece of aluminum foil ..... take a half pound of ground beef and make into four meatballs and place in the middle of the foil..... dice a medium to large potatoe and sprinkle around the meatballs...... slice a couple of carrots and a stalk of celery and add to the potatoes......season to taste....garlic powder ....steak sauce.....etc...... wrap the foil around the meal and fold the ends and seams, then freeze and take with you on Friday.....put in the shade about mid-afternoon (Sat) for 5:00 dinner......cook in fading charcoal or hot embers of a campfire about 25 minutes turning about every 5 minutes. You will see steam and smell the aroma when its done.

These are a few of the favorites my Boy Scouts take with them for a weekender.

Cooking gear: 2 Frying pans, turner, fork, sharp knife, small pot, DO. Bowl to mix things in. small cutting board. Big Spoon, measuring cups, measuring spoons, wooden spoon.
Clean up gear: Plastic Dish pan, Dish soap, sponge, dish rag, dish towel. Paper towels. 409 cleaner,
Eating gear: paper plates, paper cups, paper bowls, plastic silverware, I also have real plates, cups, bowls and silverware.
Cooking essentials: Salt, Pepper, Garllic Salt, Season Salt, Onion powder, cooking oil, chili powder, etc...what ever seasoning you are going to need for your trip. (my friend uses the snack size zip bags for small amounts of seasoning placed in a bigger zip bag.)
Misc: zip lock bags, foil, plastic wrap, garbage sacks.

Packed seperately a Coleman stove and propane. Ice Chest, ice.

I made a list on my computer to check off as things get packed.

Lynn.... You'r camping!!! Leave the measuring cups and measuring spoons at home!!! Use your coffee cup and fingers... a pinch of this, a pinch of that... LOL

I've gotten some huge bills (cause of an accidental flooding of my restroom in my third floor apartment (forgot to turn off the sink that had a slow-draining clog)) so I cannot go and camp there overnight though I might will try to go there for the saturday DO cookout just to see the teardrop for the first time and to learn the DO. (my 2nd paycheck will be on the 29th so hopefully I'll have enought money in it to let me go without using up too much money)

any idea of what cheaps item (such as ingredients for a 12" DO) I should still take with me (I might have some of those items)?

If I do stop by the campground, I might check your trailer out either way so keep an eye out for my face looking from afar (and a orange/red toyota corolla FX-16(the picture is not mine, i used it cause it the closest matching one I could find of my car)) . Oddly enought I'm pretty shy, or at least VERY reserved, in real life and may need help to get comfortable there (I'll bring a notepad just in case the background noise there are loud enought for me to have difficulties to hear and understand ppl voices.)
