Just a little fat...

Postby mikeschn » Sun Sep 17, 2006 6:00 pm

Normally I don't impose my ideas of diet on this group, but my mom just gave me a newspaper article that I want to share with you... There's more on the web if you are interested, cause I'm only going to type up the first couple paragraphs...

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Aug 23, 2006...

Just a little fat can shorten life, study says

Rob Stein
Washington Post

Washington - Bad news for all those baby boomers starting to pile on the pounds as the go thru middle age: You don't have to be obese - just a little overweight, according to a large government study.

The 10 year study of more than 500,000 US adults found that those who were just slightly overweight in their 50's were more likely to die in the next decade. Another study involving more than 1 million Korean adults, also being published in this weeks New England Journal of Medicine, produced similar results.

I know a lot of people here on the T&TTT forum fall into this age category... Hopefully I've given you a reason to lose some weight... (if applicable) :o

I want to lose 26 pounds by Christmas...

Mike,
I admire you for making the effort.
If you wanna lose that weight and possibly more before Christmas, here's a suggestion from PAST personal experience.... (When I was into it and BTW I'm not walking the talk at this time)
Start riding your bike everyday.
It will be tough at first, getting your wind and getting your butt toughened up. (First two weeks will be difficult with the 'ole saddle soreness)
Work up to a point where you cycle at least 10 miles each day within the first month, doing longer rides on the weekends. Before you know it, you'll be doing century rides...
Along with the cycling, be absolutely sure to drink at least 8 large glasses of water each day. That too will be tough for the first few weeks, 'cause you'll be pissin' as fast as you're drinkin'.
Along with the cycling and water intake, work your diet into three square meals each day, eating moderate meals and cut out the snacks at first.
CycloMax and Power Bars are good stuff to take on rides for extra fuel and hydration... (And they don't count as snacks when cylcing regularly)
Come Christmas time you will be a Lean Mean Cyclling Machine!!!

Did my little talk make me want to go out to the shop and dust the 1/2" of sawdust off of my bikes?.... No, but it worked for me when I was in that mindset.

Good idea... I enjoy bike riding... but I probably only have a month of decent weather before things really get sh*tty here...

Mike,
When I was into the routine, the weather didn't matter... In fact, it made things more interesting. Just get some good rain gear... Well, in your case, good snow gear with studded tires, maybe?
I do live in a much more mild climate than you and I tell yaa... Once you get into that routine, it becomes something your body wants and needs everyday. You will feel better than you ever have... Full of energy and life!
Come to think of it... I've been talkin' about getting back into it for quite a while now and I'm gonna be hitting the big five ohh pretty quick, so maybe I should take my own advise, eh?

Bikes are wonderful.
For those without the urge, though -- three brisk ten-minute walks a day, five days a week, are a very good alternative.

I commuted to work every day, 14 miles each way, for two months getting ready for a century ride. I didn't loose one pound. I've done a century ride every year since 1986 and I still weigh the same as before. But to be totally honest, I get so hungry that I snack all the time and I have made my own beer since 1993, and that doesnt help either.

According to the article, anyone with a Body Mass Index, BMI, between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight whereas a BMI of 30 or above is considered overweight.

Can someone tell me what that means?

How do I measure BMI?

If you don't like saddle sores try a recumbent!!!
You'll love the seat ! Mine is like sitting in an easy chair! Very comfy , the backrest gives your back great support also. I will never go back to a wedgie bike again! :o

Generally, for BMI, if you look straight down and see only stomach, or you can't see if you are wearing shoes, then you are over weight.
