According to the article, anyone with a Body Mass Index, BMI, between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight whereas a BMI of 30 or above is considered overweight.

Can someone tell me what that means?

How do I measure BMI?

Mike...

Try this: http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/.

According to this, 5'11" and 178# is not overweight... but 180 is.

I tried to convince myself that loading and unloading the Dutch Ovens in and out of the trailer, along with all their handling while cooking was actually exercise. Oh well, another idea busted.

That BMI calculator is full of %$^#!!! :x
It said I have to weigh 154 to be under 25 BMI.
It doesn't work for short, stalky, big-shouldered Norwegians, that's for sure.
When I was on that cycling kick, I got down to 148 and close friends thought I was dieing from cancer... Hell, I was in the best shape of my life.
Damned... I've been feeling good lately about being under 200 again and now that %$^# thing says that???? :x
Just for that I'm gonna go make a batch of popcorn right now, with loads of melted butter and tons of salt!!!

You know... That little calculator is a good example why I stay away from doctors. It has now provisions or allowances for bone and muscle mass... Just height and I'm sorry, but I don't agree with it.

there is something terribly wrong with that BMI calculator...it sez at 6'3" I need to be under 200 pounds...jeeeeeez....playing football in HS, I weighed 225....the best shape, I have ever been in my life, was when I lived in the Colorado Rockies and hiked everywhere and I weighed 220 and my friends thought I had been abducted by aliens for an extended time  of course, I could stand to lose about 40#s now to get back to that weight....

I'll throw in my opinions - excuse me if I tend to state them like facts!

That BMI calculator works just fine. The definition of BMI is weight divided by height squared - but using kilograms and metres.

Single BMI points are not worth worrying about, but if you are five points off where you're supposed to be, it's not because you have 'big bones'....

Exercise is certainly good for you, but as a weight loss measure, it's nearly useless. It works if you are near the balance point where your food intake and calorie consumption are equal - but if you are overweight, that's very unlikely to be true.

99% of weight control has to be done by limiting what you eat. You can either eat less quantity of the same food or eat the same quantity of less fattening food. What constitutes 'less fattening' is subject to change with time and fashion, and frequently includes total bull****, but you only need to get it about right - you don't need a diet book to tell you whether some fresh vegetables are better or worse than a sauce made of sugar and fat!

And there is some good news - has it made it onto your news programmes? Madrid city government has ruled that models may not appear in a fashion show there if their BMI is below 18 - to try to stop young women from idealising body forms that are actually unhealthy.

I had the same thing happen to me a couple of years ago. Odie & I went on diets, and I lost over 100 pounds in a little over a year :D My friends wondered if I had some illness. I was under 200 pounds for the first time in over 25 years!

Unfortunatly, I've gained back about 1/2 of it :( Felt right at about 225 pounds, but I'm up to 250, and I guess it's time to get back to the old diet.

Besides exercise and eating healthier food, we made sure that we ate 3 meals a day (used to always skip breakfast), and a couple of healthy snacks in between. Everything that we read said that you need to eat breakfast to get your metabolisim started, and eating smaller amounts more frequently was better than just eating a couple of large meals a day (which is what we had been doing).

22.9--I'M NORMAL! I'M NORMAL! I'M NORMAL!

Well, as far as my weight goes anyway.

From high school through college, I never topped 110. College through adulthood, never topped 115. Now almost age 50, and I'm hovering between 123 and 125 pounds.

If I live to be 150, I may eventually weigh what a normal human being weighs.

:R Well I am not going under 130 cause I think I look like a skeleton then. BTW since Feb. I lost a total of 12 pounds. :R
I lost 7 pounds driving around VA. Do you suppose someone would pay me to drive around. I could be normal in a couple of months at that rate.

Is our average life span getting shorter as a country?

We are certainly getting bigger (so we are told).

If you have any interest in biking through the winter, look at www.icebike.com they have lots of information about it. When I was biking 9 miles each way to work was the only time I have been in good shape.

Andrew,
I respect your view on this matter, but I dodn't agree with it...
The BMI calculator is lacking at best. (IMO)
I'd agree more with a BFI calculator, (Body Fat Calculator) which would take other things into consideration, like bone mass and muscle mass, instead of just height and weight.
I feel that the BMI over estimates my body fat ratio because it's not taking into account for my muscle mass and bone structure.
According to that BMI calculator, I come in at 31.0 and their chart says I'm not only fat... I suffer from obesity!!! That is a CROCK!!!
