I think it is all how you look at things.
I am at my ideal weight... I am just not at my ideal height that would be about 7'-2"

Maybe we are just not tall enough, I think if I was around 12' tall I would weigh about right. But what would a teardrop look like stretched out that far.

The Body Mass Indicator (BMI) is not new, having been around since the 19th century. It recently received more than it's share of bashing as it doesn't take into consideration normal age changes in muscle mass loss and fat replacement.

What we use in the hospital when doing nutritional assessments on patients...

For men...a base of 106 pounds at 5 feet. Add six pounds for every inch over 5 feet (thus IBW for a male at 6 feet with medium frame would be 178 pounds). Add 10 percent for large frame, minus 10 percent for small frames.

For women...begin with a base of 100 pounds at 5 feet. Add five pounds for every inch over 5 feet. Again, add 10 percent of large frame, minus 10 percent for small frame.

This calculation often makes people cry when I tell them this at health fairs.

I also suggest that in the privacy of their homes, they get naked, stand in front of a full length mirror and jump up and down three times. If they stop but certain body parts keep flapping, they're probably carrying too much weight.

I would suggest keeping undergarmets on for this test. Else we all be flappin'.

Great weight loss tip for all . . . use up more calories than you take in! :? As regards life spans getting shorter, there is a saying going around these days that sixty-five is the "new forty." So, no, we are living longer in these thirties-and-older generations. However, the bad news is that kids coming up now actually have a shorter life span to look forward to, due to the rampant obesity that is present in our society today. Jennifer works in a building located on school grounds, and when we meet for lunch, my heart breaks at the sight of primary school children who can't even bend over, much less touch their toes or run to catch a ball. Is there not some point at which a red flag goes up? :chips:

I don't have the confidence to say that the BMI must be 'wrong' if it says that I am overweight. I do not pass Gail's excellent 'jiggle test'. Gail, that should be a two-stage test - if you jiggle, you're overweight, and if seeing the jiggle makes you feel ill, you're very overweight.

Gail, I was interested to see what your weight guide looks like, so here it is plotted on the traditional BMI chart.

Image

Green is Gail's male guide, red is +10% and blue is -10%. Gail's guide goes from around a 21 BMI at 5' to about a 24 BMI at 6'6" - so it's not that different.

Sorry, ladies, I failed to plot your line - shall I do another one?

Oh, and I've added the British description for the over 40 BMI - 'Morbidly Obese'. I found seeing those words helped me to lose weight!

Doing the numbers with this method I'm 8 lbs under weight and I know I could loose a few pounds by looking in the mirror. My bathroom scale gave me a BMI of 20.5 this morning. Hum...  Danny

Your all jealous, just because I got a better return on my food dollar than you, now I am fat. Gee thanks I feel so much better now. I guess I will have to build a wider teardrop with heavier springs now to use.
