The 'Mander has sidewalls... : )

Postby forestfrog » Thu Sep 21, 2006 5:21 pm

The Meandering 'Mander is starting to look like a teardrop (instead of a pile of lumber), LOL! The final profile looks nothing like my original sketches, but I needed to take 6" off the height even after adjusting the axle position (so it wouldn't be taller than a VW TDI New Beetle).

I marked the hardboard pattern piece at 42" tall and experimented with different radius combinations using a string and piece of chalk (highly technical, I know ;) ). I decided on a 42” rear radius and an 18” front radius…the door is 36” square with a 6” radius on three corners and an 18” radius on the top rear corner. I had to make the doors big enough for a Great Dane to get in and out comfortably, LOL!

Teardrops are nearly as addictive as VWs...just what I need, another addiction! :? :D

Kristi... Nice job on laying out and cutting the side panels!
Congratulations... You're on a roll... The rest being smaller & easier to handle will prolly go pretty fast. You are an inspiration to many teardrop wannabee's.

Looking very good. Those large doors a gonna be great for access and breeze. Oz will have no problem getting in and out. Looks like you are about to master the radius cut!

Radii's Rule!
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Kristi,
So far so good, Hey whats that thing your driving? I had a volkswagen addiction most my adult life and hope to get back to them at some point. I like salamanders and frogs but I lean to ensatinas myself, that doesn't ryhme with many things and it doesn't come up in conversation too much so thanks for letting me be the first to type the word ensatina on this forum. good luck on the addiction thing when you get to dutch oven cooking.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! It's probably NOT a realistic goal, but I'd love to have the 'Mander campable for the Lake Bistineau gathering in 5 weeks (not necessarily finished, but liveable). 8)

Hey whats that thing your driving?

You've definitely suffered the addiction if you're asking that question...the 'Whose on First?' of the VW world, LOL.
What's that thar thing?
You're exactly right!
Huh?
It's a Thing.
What kind of thing?
A VW Thing...
That thing is a Thing?
etc, etc, etc...

I lean to ensatinas

Very cool little critters! Unfortunately, we don't have that genus here. We have other lungless salamander species, but none are quite like Ensatina.

good luck on the addiction thing when you get to dutch oven cooking.

Funny you should mention that, LOL! I bought my first dutch oven yesterday...a 10" pre-seasoned...not a Lodge to start with though. I'm going to try it out this weekend (if I can decide on a recipe).

Addiction? What's that? Just think, 2 weeks after IRG I didn't own a Dutch oven, now look what happened. Still have to season the deep 14" oven. Don't think I'll bother looking for a 5" though. I got a Camp Chef to fill that hole.

I recommend the "dump cobbler" it's easy and you usually get good results. I make it all the time, I change it up everytime though. Gotta keep tweaking it.

Kristi
Nice start on your project, keep on keeping on!

Now for you I have a question [also for a lot others on this forum] When it comes to camping you are a minimalist I assume [the tear gives it away] but when it comes to dogs you have the NBA model.
You are going to have a 42" tear and a 52" dog!
