How do you get rid of MOLES!

Postby Woodbutcher » Fri Sep 22, 2006 6:53 pm

My yard is being distroyed by Moles. These little b@stards are tunneling and burrowing everywhere. I have tried some of the bait food and one of those spring fork traps, with little luck. So far my dogs have caught a few. But they dig up the yard doing that. I feel like Carl from Caddy Shack chasing the gophers. I drive my lawn tractor over all the hills and trails before I cut the grass each week. Then before I even finish cutting the grass there are some hills back up. It's driving me nuts! Has anyone had any success killing these things or should I move?

I've been fighting moles for two years now. This summer, after I filled a tunnel with concrete, they left for good. I am so happy... (I musta hit their main nest...) I hope they stay away. I removed their main source of food, and am in the process of eliminating any places they can move into... I.e. under concrete slabs...

Woodbutcher...I've had good luck with a product called "The Giant Destroyer" it's about 4" long and 1" dia...stick a fuse in the end and dig into a main tunnel...put it in, light the fuse, and cover the hole...it gasses them...it will use up the oxygen in the tunnels and put out a noxious gas...smells like a crappy firework...worked for me...and it must be safe...they sell them here in Calif...Doug

Thanks guys. I will order some and give it a try. I easily have 40 trails in differant parts of my yard. I have a place in the country and the yard is about 1.5 acres. My Orkin man told me about a bait that looks like a worm you put into an active tunnel. I went on the website he gave me and they will only sell to exterminaters. My Orkin guys don't sell it. The website gave no referals. So I will try to sufficate them!

another idea...and this one might ruffle some feathers out there, but in Colo when we had an infestation of Prairie Dogs on the farm..they can really tear up a field...make an ignitor from a spark plug on some long (keyword long) wires...drop an acetylene hose into the burrow..cover the entrances...fill the burrows hit the ignitor...watch the fireworks...this technique is not for the faint of heart, volume of gas may blow up more stuff than you want...best in open fields...ideally should be done with a group of idiots fueled up on adult beverages :lol: :lol: Doug

I've heard that the reason you get Moles in the first place is because you have "grubs" get rid ofg the grubs and the Moles will move on........A good cheap grub killer is that "diamataceous Earth" the white powder you put in swimming pool filters

hi,

My family in Vermont have a two prong attack for moles and mice alike. :thumbsup:

Harbor Freight Windmill

1)Windmill fan creates a thumping on the ground ... drives um away.
Image

Decorative and Humane
Rid your yard and garden of plant damaging moles
without the use of dangerous toxins or traps.
Windmill-style fan creates an underground ruckus
that sends moles packing.

* Smooth spinning ball bearing shaft
* Blade dimensions: 18''L x 2-1/2''W
* Overall dimensions: 19-1/8''L x 18-1/8''W
* Weight: 2.30 lbs.

Pole not included.

ITEM 47987-2VGA Harbor Freight

$7.99

Most any big type windmill type pinwheel that will transfer noise of the
whirl through the stick to the ground will do da deed, to make um leave~

2)Sonic attack rodents

Now I saw both of these methods work on moles this summer in Vermont.

The moles outside stopped digging when the thumping went on with windmill actions of strategically placed units.

The electronic method I saw work as some moles were under a portion of the house that was close to the interior wall ... by putting one of these devices where we heard the small ones .... within a day there were no more sounds and the outside near the wall where the critters were digging stopped being a bad spot.

Go get them varmints :twisted:

my experience

Postby Turtle49 » Sat Sep 23, 2006 7:23 am

A couple of years ago I hired someone to come in for the whole summer. He let me walk around with him and this is what I learned.

First: Get rid of the grubs, Nytewyng was right about this.

Second: When you set traps, you want to follow their trail back to the tree line or edge of the lawn. This is because the mole comes into the lawn during the day and they go back into the woods at night. And then set the trap there. Do not stomp down the trails or the moles might make another when they return to the woods.

There are also poisonous worms you can buy at your local tractor supply that you can put in their trails and then cover them back up.

Honestly I've had the best luck with setting the traps the way the mole guy told me.

Good Luck!

HF sells that mole windmill.

My Dad had his own method. He would sit in a chair in the yard in the evenings watching the hole with his 16 guage browning auto in his lap. (we were in a very rural area with no houses across the road). When the dirt started being pushed out, he'd aim at the dirt pile and wait til he saw a head. Result-------No more mole.

This method by far sounds like the most fun... :lol: :lol: :lol:
I've done something similar that involved a pellet gun and rats coming out from under the chicken coop.

I killed a couple of them with a shovel when I saw them moving around in the yard. But normally they are more discrete... :o
