From what I've heard, if your yard is illuminated by streetlights, you are more prone to have a grub problem. The bugs that are attracted to the light at night are the ones that will lay the eggs that later turn into grubs.

Every year my lawn people recommend a Grub Treatment, and every year I decline. I think they are just upselling me anyway. There are no streetlights at all in my neighborhood which may be the reason why I've never had the problem. I've never seen a mole or mole trail either. Mice are a different story though, plenty of those on the back fence.

Found these "recipes" also info about the grubs being their main diet so rid the yard of those.
But another question of mine is -- would I just pour the castor oil recipe in any and all the holes, or how do you know where they are coming from? I mean, where the main line is ?



"Unwelcome" Recipe

I have a recipe that will get rid of your moles and not harm your yard. Take 1 cup of Murphy's Oil Soap, 1 oz. Castor Oil and 1/4 cup Cayenne Pepper. Mix and cut 2 to 1 with warm water. Put this in a hose end sprayer and saturate the area where you are having the problem. If you can find its burrow entrance flood the hole and oil soap will make the castor oil stick to its skin. The Castor Oil is a natural stinging agent and causes its skin to itch and the Cayenne pepper will burn where it itches. This mixture will not kill it but it will make it very unwelcome. If you have a strong rain, re-spray as soon as the ground is dry and do not let the family pets get in this area. This is also good for squirrels, coons and possums.

I recently found an animal and pest repellent called Shake-Away. There are two forms: Fox Urine Powder (for moles, opossums, mice, etc.) and Coyote Urine Powder (for animals such as deer, raccoon, and elk) .The way it works is each powder triggers a fear response in other animals. Two Interesting Mole Removal Ideas

I have used flea and tick shampoo. Use 1 cup of flea and tick shampoo (for cats & dogs) to 20 gallons of water and it will do 2,500 sq. ft. I have given this idea to several people and it seems to work.

The other thing you can try is to go to a beauty shop and get some hair that has been cut. Use something to put it down into the runs in the yard. It is said that the hair makes the mole itch and they don't like that and will leave the area. I have not tried this one but have heard it works.

Oklahoma J , I have been fighting moles for 9 years now. I have talked to several people about the habits of moles. Grubs are a source of food as are earthworms( nitecrawlers) . Obviously ya can't or don't want to kill the worms as they are good for your soil, but the grubs can be controlled with an application of grub killer. As far as the " home remedeys" to run off moles , bubble gum in a tunnel, ground glass, human hair, vibrating machines, sound emitters, etc, etc. They usually don't work or work on a VERY limited basis. I have used a commercial castor oil spray ( from Lowes) that is hooked to your hose & is delivered by broadcasting your lawn all over. 1 bottle will cover 5000 square feet. It runs about 12.00 bucks a bottle & when it gets rained into the soil the moles WILL leave the covered area. Usualy I apply in the late spring & maybe in the late summer. It depends on how much rain I get. I will even apply right after I apply my grub killer. since it all needs to be watered in ( or rained in ) . If a mole happens to come from a neighbor into my yard I use my mole trap( see earlier post with pic of trap. It WORKS GREAT! As a matter of fact I have a dead mole in my trap today, I set it last nite & have killed a mole today! YIPPPEEE! When I get home I will take a pic & post it.
The ground you have depend on how much mole activity you have. hard ground, clay ,rocky ground , usualy does not have moles . Soft loamy soil, sandy soil usualy has high activity. Check out www.themoletrap.com. Its a killer trap!

AND Bats don't dig tunnels in your yard, AND they eat TONS of disease-vector 'skeeters and other annoying flying pests...

Watched a battle between a horse fly and a bat one early evening... Took the bat about three dive bombs, and a flanking attack from a second bat, but the horse fly was gone... Problem was, I cleaned out the source that the horse flys were feeding, and the bats moved on to tastier yards...

There's a great story about a guy who wanted to open a resort on Sugarloaf Key, and built a bat tower to deal with the mosquitoes.

I once had a design to build a bat house. It had a very narrow slit door at the bottom, and would house several dozen bats. But, I never built it. It needs to be placed in a high place, like on a telephone pole, and I didn't have a good place to hang it. I don't know if they would roost in one attached to a house, or if that's even high enough.

When I was a kid, here in central FL, I liked to watch the bats in the evenings, swooping and diving after insects.

drop dry ice in the main run if you can find it and cover all the open holes you can find. the carbon dioxide from the dry ice melting is heavier than air so it hangs in the runs and suffercates the little monsters. my chief mole chaser (wife) likes traps better, she says she likes to have confirmed kills

My sisters house has bats that live in the vents on the end of the house. The vents are basically just raised up areas of siding that are open on the back. There is screen on inside. They are messy though...

My dogs keep the moles away here. They can hear them digging!!

I killed them once by hooking a vacum cleaner hose to my pickup truck tailpipe a stuck the hose to one of the tunnels started the engine untill I saw smoke coming up through the little critter holes and let it run for 10 minutes. The carbon monoxide did the rest!

A mole was doing damage all summer to my wife's garden. I roto-tilled it and raked it smooth. Then waited for a fresh pile of dirt to appear. A few minutes of waiting and one shot from a 12-gauge with #2 shot seemed to work quite well.
