(Same thread as before, I just added an important new post at the very end.)
Watch out Coral Springs and adjoining neighborhoods—my free magazine will finally be hitting the streets, around January.
Yes, The Florida Funnies/Coral Springs Edition will actually be going to press.
This has been a dream of mine for about 15 years, but I could never come up with the scratch for the inaugural issue, between 5 and 10 grand. With a full-time job, I simply wouldn't have the time to solicit advertisers, so I planned on basically absorbing the printing cost of the first issue myself--and using that as a model to sell future issues. (I was going to offer free ad space at first to at least have ads in there, with upgrades to a larger space at a cost.)
However, I recently had my main printer estimate the cost for me, and he called yesterday and said, "Ira, we're going to print it for nothing for you. You are our best customer, giving us a lot of business, and you're the easiest and most professional guy to work with that we've EVER known."
I SWEAR HE SAID THAT! AND HE WASN'T DRUNK!
I won't go into the intracies of web versus offset printing, but this will be 4-color offset, which is like a real magazine, not a newspaper.
Basically, The Florida Funnies is going to be like The Onion, but in print. Of course, as its writer and designer, it will epitomize my sick sense of humor. It will poke fun of the city and its personalities, and be a little naughty--because I know that will offend some people, and that's what I'm after. In short, I want to make some trouble.
And make people laugh (hopefully) while doing it.
The mag's already about 25% done, but I have to reformat it to a new size. Cover is done, including this lead story:
"Giant Leap in Evolution:
Pregnant Coral Springs Woman Lactates BEER!"
(And can you guess the visuals I'm using for THAT!?)
I'm excited.
