5x8 red trailer questions

Postby amandastevenisbet » Sun Oct 01, 2006 8:04 pm

To give you a little background on myself. I only owned a power drill for hanging pictures before I started this project. But I'm very determined. For the past month I've done lots of research on teardrops. I have purchased plans from Kuffel Creek, and have also studied the Generic Benroy Plans. I decided on a 5x8 trailer from redtrailers to build on. It comes in black for those that don't like the red. OK well the directions that come with this trailer are very very bad. Nothing was labeled. Took me about an hour to figure out what went where. Once I figured out what went where I tried to follow the Benroy, and Cubby plans for building the trailer. The plans on both of them for building the trailer was very confusing to me. I had no idea that I would need to drill so many holes and cut so much metal off. I'm not even sure if I should have drilled so many holes. Then on top of that I had to cut more metal off the axle brakets to allow for bolts then drill some more. I just hope I did everything right. I would hate for this thing to fall apart when I'm driving
The question I have is for the mounting of the wooden cross brace. How is this mounted to the frame? Does It just get glued in? And then screwed into the flooring so that it doesn't move. I'm clueless.

I'd have to see the channel on your black frame, but if it's anything like the 1175# trailer, all you need to do is cut the end of your wooden frame member so that it fits snug into the channel, and then run a bolt thru the channel and your wood.

Got a camera? Can you share a picture with us. You'll get lots of answers if we can see it! :o ;)

I am downloading pictures from my camera to my computer right now. Once i figure it out I will post some pictures of my trailer.
Does anyone have a picture of how they bolted the wooden cross member?

Amandastevenisbet, I built my tear on the same trailer frame. Mine had colored stickers on each piece to identify them. It went together easily! Maybe their quality control people were asleep, and you got one that went out without stickers!

Here is how I did mine...well sort of, I don't have a pic of the wood cross member but this is how I did it.

I made brackets out of scrap alum angel edit angle (damn dyslexia). Its not very pretty but it works. I will get more pics of the wood cross member tonight and post tomorrow.

Check my WWW for my Blog. I have just started my build with the same Red Trailer.

Thank you Mary. That makes it so much easier. I've had a headache all day thinking about it. I don't drill very straight :?
This would make it tons easier.
Thanks again.
Off to drilling.

I just cut the 2x4 to fit inside the side rails and then used lag bolts to secure it to the frame.

I started with nothing and still have most of it left.
