Great weekend Fishing

Postby Sonetpro » Tue Oct 03, 2006 4:28 am

I fished (helped out) a event this last weekend. This is put on by a fishing forum I belong to. It is called Beyond The Breakers.
The more expereinced yak fisherman on this site put this annual seminar together to teach technique and saftey to new members wanting to fish offshore as we do. Prior to the event we have seminars to teach Saftey when off shore as well a rigging and fish handleing. This helps with the newbies that want to jump in feet first and help keep them out of trouble.
Heres a few of the fish I caught.

Here's a slide show of the event. For most of these people this is their first time off shore in a yak. And the first large fish they caught out of one.

Nice bunch of reds. Where did you guys go? My buddies had their annual camping/fishing trip last weekend out on PINS. I couldn't go because I have no vacation time. I had to wait for my Sept vac time to kick in so that I could go to LCG.

Rocky, we were at High Island. One of my favorite stomping grounds. I try to make PINS once a year, but it's a long drive for me.
Just a note. All of these fish were released. The only trophy's we keep are the pic's. All are only kept out of the water long enough for pic's. I'll fill the freezer up when the flounder start running next month.
I wasn't targeting sharks as I usually do, we were using split blue crabs.

Steve, you guys amaze me. If I would try something like that, not only would I get sick from bouncing around the waves, them fish would probably put the bite on me! I've seen the teeth on some of the salt water fish and since that is their only weapon, I'm sure they don't mind using them. What's that thing you've got stuffed in their mouth?

I've never been seasick so I don't know what it feels like.
The thing in their mouth is a boga grip. Its a metal lipper, Like you said they all have teeth.

Stonetpro,

That is way cool!! Nice reds!!

I live in the prefect place to kayak fish, and I have a Kayak... but I have never done it... Well, yes I have, but it was way to windy and my hook got snagged on something and I lost all my line and almost my rod&reel so I never tried it again.

That seminar is a great idea also, cause I know I would get myself in trouble if I tried going out without some instructions.

Do you mainly use top water baits, or live stuff? Do you fish at night??? Or is that asking for trouble. I guess you could in the bay's staying close to shore... Hum...

OH Great!! Thanks, now you got me thinking about another hobby. Next week I will be obsessed with it ...Thanks alot!!! :x

I think it's a long drive for everybody. We usually camp somewhere past the 45mi marker. Once we get off pavement, it feels like it takes an eternity to get there. That's probably why we like going out there, not too many people when you get out that far.

Mary, this obsession with Kayak fishing is what started my teardrop obsession. The Fish Inn was built just for that purpose.
We fish fresh netted bait. and big ones. We use 16 or 19 circle hooks.
Alot of guys fish the bay's but I don't that often.
We NEVER fish alone or at night. (only off the sand at night. )
The seminar was great. To see these guys and gals catching a fish they will remember the rest of their lives. And declaring that " It's a monster" is priceless.

Thanks for the info Steve. I haven't gone finishing in 2 years, I do miss it. And the sad thing is I have everything I need to go, just no experience ... I'll work on that after I finish the TD!!

Thanks again,

Steve, Come on down I'll put you on some fish. The two guys I camped with over the weekend were from San Antonio, And two from Austin.
Yep thats a funnel cloud it came out of nowhere. We didn't have any rain. It was probally 10 miles offshore. We were out about a mile.

Steve: :)

This is the first time I have seen one of these Boga Grips:

That tool must grip a hold of those big monsters with
extreme, spellbinding traction, AKA (Like it means to keep um)? :eyebrows:

Wonder if there would be a market for just any married man for a tool like this?

It would seem that if you stuck that thing down a fish's mouth and got a grip, you'd have a pi$$ed off fish. :D I guess they don't feel pain the way we do, or at least the way I do........

It's just like lipping a bass with your fingers. But everything has teeth, so you use steel fingers instead. Reds don't get PO'd. But the sharks sure do. Thats one of the things taught, how to handle a PO'd shark.
