Not just clear coat. They'll eat through just about any enamel paint. I'm not sure about water based though. I failed to wash a couple off the front of my TTT and have some small spots to touch up in the oil-based enamel I used. I still remember the first car that I had when they started showing up in Florida, back inthe 70s, and we didn't know we had to keep them washed off. The front of the hood was pitted all the way across. I learned fast about keeping the car free of their spatters.

I have a bug screen on the front of my new truck right now to keep them out of the radiator. In the 70s, they were so thick that driving from Orlando to the Cape to work would clog up a radiator, but I drove a VW bug to work and didn't have a radiator problem...just had to keep them off the paint. Come to think of it, I bought that bug screen in the early 70s and kept it stored while I was in Maryland for 27 years. Now, I'm using it again.

Sometimes I pretend to be normal. But, that gets boring...so I go back to being me.
